You're Invited: Mardi Gras Math Night!

Hope you will mark your calendars to join us on Tuesday, February 13 at 6:00 p.m. for a new Elm Street event: Mardi Gras Math Night!

Mardi Gras beads and masks are all part of the celebration of learning as we enjoy a family fun night of games reinforcing math skills while also learning about Mardi Gras. Families will have a chance to play many different games together to earn beads! Our night will also feature opening ceremonies, crowning of Mardi Gras King and Queen, and a closing recessional parade with a jazzy beat that we will all join in. Most students will even work to create Mardi Gras masks in Art with Ms. O'Mahoney as they study texture. Parents and other guests are invited to bring a mask as well. Please RSVP so we can plan ahead. Can't wait to spend the evening with you, Mardi Gras style!

Club Photos Friday, January 12

Club photos will be taken for the yearbook on Friday, January 12. Please be sure you are at school on time as we will begin early in the morning! Special thanks to Ms. Jovanca Blackburn for working to produce our school yearbook and helping with club pictures. Our yearbook is treasured by everyone each year.

Parents, please be sure your child is prepared for Club Yearbook Photos by having them wear (or bring) the attire listed below. We encourage children to have their initials on the tag of their shirts too, just in case one gets misplaced during the day!

Elm Street presents "Core of the Work" to Coweta County School Board

The Coweta County School Board invites a handful of schools each year to share a learning experience at the school board meeting. Elm Street had the opportunity to present at the January Board Meeting earlier this week. We were well-represented by several of Ms. Springfield's second graders who spoke to board members about their scientific inquiry lesson. Students were eager to share how they researched a topic with their own specific questions in mind. They then shared how they planned and carried out an experiment to determine how the phases of the moon occur, showing the playground ball, tennis ball, and flashlight they used in the process as well as the graph of their hypothesis from the beginning of their study and how their learning changed as a result. Impressive science! Kudos to the group who spoke to board members on behalf of their class and our school!

Elm Street Spelling Bee held in December

Congratulations to each Spelling Bee participant pictured above! Students earned the opportunity to take part in the school competition by outspelling classmates in classroom competitions. The top two finishers in each fourth and fifth grade class became part of our school event held in December. Intense competition took place at our school bee until two finalists remained. Then, after several rounds of back and forth spelling, Macie Lynne Bohannon emerged as champion and Will Elder earned a strong second place finish. Congratulations to all students who took part in the Elm Street Spelling Bee. It was an honor to watch you compete. Congratulations, once again, to our finalists and our champion. Macie Lynne will represent Elm Street at the Coweta Spelling Bee on Thursday, January 11 at 6:30 p.m. Will Elder will serve as alternate. The Coweta Bee is open to the public with free admission at the Donald W. Nixon Center for the Arts on Lower Fayetteville Road. Please feel welcome to come cheer on our school!

Congratulations Winner and Alternate! Good luck in Coweta Bee on January 11!

Houses Sing-a-long at December's Encore Chorus Concert

The Twelve Days of Christmas was lots of fun to sing together at our most recent House Gathering just prior to the December break. Students and staff enjoyed hearing an encore of the Chorus Christmas Concert and then began their own caroling with houses singing lines from The Twelve Days of Christmas to one another. Good times all around! Congrats to Akhom, Ekara, Iolar, and Uwohali on the collaborative effort!

Reading Caves receive rave reviews once again!

Elm Street's Media Center was transformed into a wonderland of Reading Caves once again this past month. Special thanks to the parents and teachers who planned and designed a cave for students to enjoy! It takes hours of dedicated effort to pull off of reading caves and they would not exist without the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and teacher coordinators. Thank you, Ms. Ewing, Teachers, and Volunteers for helping students make special Reading Cave memories again this year! An article appeared in the Newnan Times Herald about our Elm Street caves as well. Check out the link below to read all about it!

Pajama Storytime a success!

Pajama Storytime debuted in the Media Center for Kindergarten and First Grade Families in late November. We had a great time listening to guest readers and working on special crafts together! Thank you, Ms. Ewing for planning this new event for our families. Thank you, Ms. Springfield and Ms. Wimbley for serving as guest readers and thank you, Ms. Hall, Coach Baker, and Dr. Hildebrand for lending a hand with activities. Special thanks to all of the students, parents, and families who spent their evening here under the Elm! Looking forward to this event in future years!
