Shepard News & Notes
March 3, 2017
Hello Shepard Families:
Our first ever weekly student newscast is up! Each week students will deliver a week in review newscast to celebrate student accomplishments. Thank you to our student leaders, Ms. Chroman, and Mr. Wolfe for making it happen. Please view below!
Warm Regards,
John
1st Posting - BrightBytes Syrvey
District 109 is committed to continue our in-depth review of the impact of our use of technology in teaching and learning. Our partnership with BrightBytes, an educational technology research company, allows us to conduct valid surveys and gain very specific, insightful and actionable data. We are seeking input from staff, students (grades 4-8) and parents. Please take about 5-10 minutes to complete the BrightBytes questionnaire. The deadline to complete the survey is March 20.
1st/FINAL Posting - CPR & AED Tutorials
District 109 encourages parents and staff to understand how to perform hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation and to use an automated external defibrillators. State law requires the Illinois High School Association to post a hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillators training video on its website. District 109 encourages parents and staff to click here to view the video on the IHSA website. It will take less than 15 minutes of your time.
We offer staff an online tutorials on AED use (staff can click here to log in and access that tutorial).
2nd/FINAL Posting - Standards Based Grading Parent Event
District 109 aligns our curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices with identified learning standards. As part of that alignment, this year, we implemented standards based grading and reporting (SBGR) in our middle schools, which has been in place in the elementary schools for the past four years. As part of our continuing efforts to educate parents about SBGR, we are holding parent education sessions with one of the nation’s leading experts on standards based learning, grading, and reporting, Rick Wormeli.
Please mark your calendar for March 8; Rick will hold two identical parent sessions, one in the afternoon (12:30pm-2:00pm) and one in the evening (6:30pm-8:00pm). As part of Rick’s presentation, there will be time reserved to address parent questions and concerns specific to District 109’s implementation and ongoing progress with SBGR. District administration and building staff will be part of those discussions.
Click to RSVP to a March 8 session
We will chose the best location for these workshops based upon the number of RSVPs we receive.
On March 20, Dr. Jeff Zoul, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning, and a team of teachers and administrators, will make a presentation to the Board of Education about the transition to standards based learning, grading and reporting in our middle schools. Kathryn Anderson, principal of Deerfield High School, also will share the high school perspective and progress on SBGR.

3rd/FINAL Posting - Botvin Lifeskills Parent Program: Only One Session Left!
Please join us for the last parent LifeSkills sessions on 3/7 at Shepard Middle School at 7:00pm. Here's a link to the complete schedule. The speakers for the last session is:
- 3/7, Taking a Clear Stand on Drugs: Barbara de Nekker, executive director of Community - The Anti-Drug (CTAD). After this final session, CTAD will be hosting a dessert reception so we can gather to celebrate the completion of this great program, and continue our conversations.
4th Posting - Traffic Reminders
We take great pride in ensuring safe and efficient drop off and pick up procedures! Please view the attached aerial map for a visual of drop off procedures. Remember that traffic in and out of Shepard moves one direction. You will approach Shepard moving south in a single file line on Grove Avenue and exit to the east on Poplar Lane. Do not park and exit your car while on Grove, in front of the school, or on Poplar. If you must exit your vehicle, you need to park in the main lot--the Buildings & Grounds lot is not open to parents.
During pick up, please be kind to our neighbors. Do not park in front of driveways and refrain from making 3-point turns in the street or in our neighbors driveways to head north on Grove. Not only do our neighbors frequently complain about their driveways being used for this purpose, this presents a safety risk to our students.
Please respect all traffic signs and stay off your cell phone. You will see your building administrators out and about in yellow vests welcoming students and directing traffic. If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask. Bottom line - obey the rules, be patient, and keep moving!
