Pope Francis

Tomorrow, nine members of our 8th grade class will be in a special section outside the Apostolic Nunciature to hopefully say hello to Pope Francis! Please keep them in your prayers. Our students and their Walk With Francis pledges were featured on the CBS Evening News on Monday night! Teacher of the Week

Courtney Smith of Bowie, Maryland was named the Archdiocese of Washington “Teacher of the Week” on Friday, September 18, 2015. Mrs. Smith is in her 3rd year teaching prekindergarten at The Academy of Saint Matthias the Apostle in Lanham, Maryland. She has been teaching preschool for the past 13 years and has been a member of the Saint Matthias community since her daughter was a student here! Mrs. Smith is a lifelong learner and spent this summer at Boston College’s Two-Way Immersion Network training, learning about language instruction in early childhood.

Cross Country Team

On Sunday, our cross country team had their first race of the season. Congrats to all team members on a great first race. The team DOES NOT have practice this week due to the Papal visit and scheduling conflicts. Their next race is Sunday at Villa Rosa at 12:00 noon.

Fall Festival

This year's Fall Festival is fast approaching. The Festival will be held on Saturday, October 3 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. It's a day of fun activities for everyone. We need parent volunteers for set up, food, game managers, parking lot attendant and clean up. Bands will increase to $30 the day of the event.

Scavenger Hunt

Sixth Grade participated in a cross-curricular scavenger hunt on Friday, September 19. Their journey took them into textbooks and other books, along with going throughout the building to find answers to questions on their scavenger hunt. The project not only made them work hard academically, it also reinforced the importance of teamwork!

Resource Department Expands

Saint Matthias was awarded at Catholic Coalition for Special Education (CCSE) grant to expand our resource department. Mrs. O’Brien is now with us four days of the week! We are so proud that students of many abilities and needs are a part of our school family. Thank you to CCSE for their support of Saint Matthias.

Most Deserving Teacher Contest

WTOP Click For A Cause

WTOP/WASHINGTON is once again holding an online contest for non-profit organizations, “Click for a Cause,” giving area charities a shot at three cash prizes of $12,000, $10,000, and $8,000, respectively. Voting will take place SEPTEMBER 14th-25th with winners announced the week of SEPTEMBER 28th. Vote for Saint Matthias as a part of WTOP’s “Click for a Cause” between now and September 25th! Virtus Reminder

All volunteers who have contact with children and/or volunteer during school hours (8:00 am-3:00 pm) must complete a one-time Child Protection class and have an
E-Background check performed in accordance with Archdiocesan policy. Stop by the office to pick up the necessary forms and go online to www.virtusonline.org to register for an upcoming class.
