PRINCIPAL AND VICE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
How much do your children watch you read?
When I became an educator, my friends who were starting to have children asked me the same question, “What do I need to do to get my kids ready for school?”. I always gave the same, single, simple response: “Read to them every night.” It was a response from my own childhood. My parents read to me every night, without fail.
It is incredibly bonding to share a story with children. It creates an experience to reflect on together, question, wonder, and learn from. By far, some of the best conversations I’ve had with my students as a teacher stemmed from questioning or wondering about a character’s actions, decisions, or motives.
However, after my years in education, I began to refine my answer to the question about school readiness. I still recommend reading to children every night, no matter the age. However, I now have an addendum to my answer: “Read to them every night, and have them watch you read.”
When was the last time your children saw you read? Students at Bonny Slope are bombarded daily about the importance of reading, especially at home. We also know that our actions teach our students louder than words.
It’s one thing to demand that they read for twenty minutes every night. It’s another thing to read alongside them, in your own book, newspaper, or magazine. Think of the important lesson you will teach by taking some time at night to do this simple act.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Consistent Plans are Essential for Safety
We are asking that you formulate a consistent going-home plan for your child; be sure your child and his/her teacher are aware of the plan, and stick to that plan for the school year. If you need to change your child’s going-home plan, please be sure to send a note to school with your child; have the note verified by the office and the classroom teacher. We understand that emergencies can occur.
If an unexpected event forces you to change your child’s going-home plans after 8:20 am, please call the school office directly at 503-356-2040. Teachers are engaged with students all day long, and emailing changes to teachers is not a reliable way to share emergency information, especially when there is a substitute. Please ONLY change plans in case of rare emergencies. Our top priority is keeping every student safe. Frequent plan changes result in confusion on the part of students, teachers, and office staff; we cannot guarantee that last-minute information will reach students in a timely manner. Please help us to keep every student safe by following a consistent plan.
Additionally, we ask all parents to avoid picking up their children early.
Our office is very busy, especially between 2:45-3:05pm. It is for this reason we ask that you do not interrupt the class to pick up your child between 2:45-3:05 pm.
Student Success Act
The Oregon Legislature passed and the Governor signed the $2 billion Student Success Act (HB 3427) in Spring 2019. This is an historic and much needed investment in K-12 schools. Beaverton could be able to access an estimated $34 million per year through a state application process.
School districts will be required to apply for funds. Districts must demonstrate engagement of the community in a needs assessment process prior to the application for funds. The needs assessment includes the District’s existing Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) and an expanded public engagement process with multiple and diverse stakeholders.
Districts are allowed four broad uses for the grant proposals:
- Increasing instructional time
- Addressing student health and safety needs
- Increasing adults/decreasing class size
- Expanding well-rounded learning opportunities.
Programs must also meet students’ behavioral and mental health needs and increase academic achievement as well as reduce disparities among student groups.
Phase I community engagement will seek input on what is working and what improvements are needed.
Your voice matters! We welcome your perspective and opinion. Take our BSD Needs Assessment Survey!

Lost and Found
Our Lost and Found is Overflowing. If your student is missing anything please have them search the lost and found. Parents are welcome to look for missing items after checking in at the office as well. Please label everything your student brings to school to make it easier to return lost items.

Options School Application Process for 2020-2021
The Beaverton School District is nationally recognized for high student achievement and innovative programs. Beaverton students in grades 6-12 have the opportunity to investigate learning options that best fit their academic needs. Students can choose their neighborhood school, or apply for one of a number of Learning Option Programs. Transportation is provided.
Applications for the 2020-2021 school year will be available starting Monday, October 14, 2019. Please do some early investigation of the Learning Options Programs online and plan to attend one or more of the open houses that are available. Students may only select one option on their application.
All applicants must reside within the Beaverton School District boundaries. Beginning October 14, current Beaverton School District students are able to apply online using their BSD student ID. Resident students not currently attending a Beaverton school will need to complete a paper application available online, or at any school office beginning October 14, 2019. Applicants who do not have Internet access may also complete a paper application available at any school office. Please give careful consideration to your choice of school.
