February 2016 Newsletter

A Message from the APHS Leadership Team

Dear APHS Community,

We are officially at the half-way point of the school year - midterms have concluded and the second semester has begun. As we move into the second half of the year, it is important to discuss academic performance with your child. For many students, this new semester will serve as a fresh start with new opportunities to refocus and get on track. If the report card shows your child is struggling, please arrange to have him/her stay after school with a teacher for some extra help. You may also request our child to enter into an Intervention class, if the schedule allows. . As always, your child's counselor can help plan a course for success, so please don’t hesitate to touch base with them.

In looking ahead to the 2016-17 school year, we have been working to update our Guide to Program Planning. We are happy to share with you that it is now ready, and includes eight new courses. The new courses are:

Advanced Placement Studio Art – Full Year Course, Art elective, Graduation Pathway

French 1/2 Accelerated – Full Year Course, LOTE elective

Global and Domestic Issues – Semester Course, Social Studies elective

Health and Nutrition – Semester Course, Health elective

Music Theory – Full Year Course, Music elective

Sociology – Semester Course, Social Studies elective, Distance Learning potential

Survey of Latin American History and Language – Semester Course, LOTE elective

Sustainable Horticulture I and II – Semester Course, Science elective course

As your child will now go into planning meetings with counselors, please review the course guide, search through the course catalog, and review graduation requirements to support the conversations. The website is: http://averillpark.k12.ny.us/guide-main-page
