Coaching 4 P's
Review, Preview, Praise and Problems: Nov. 23-Dec. 4
Progress (OPE Nov. 23-24 & FOE Nov. 30-Dec. 4)
- Worked on State Cohort assignments (Data write-ups for student strengths and goals and HPLC results with goals and strategies to reach the goals).
- Reviewed John Collins videos to pull-out segments for PLC/vertical team discussions. Prepared agendas and copied lesson descriptors.
- Attended 2-3 grade vertical team meeting.
- Worked on new RIT Band groups for 5th grade (OIS & use vocabulary).
- Co-taught in fifth grade ELA classroom. We worked on choosing good books, expanding vocabulary, "sticky thinking" for fiction and nonfiction, and writing long from sticky notes. I worked with the teacher in both of her ELA blocks, and we created anchor charts as we took turns conducting mini-lessons.
- Attended District coaches' meeting Thursday. We discussed DRA2, John Collins, and Fountas & Pinnell "Remembers".
- Gathered Patricia Pollaco books for a third grade author study.
- Held "On the fly" conferences with several teachers regarding John Collins celebrations and grading.
- Introduced two grade levels to John Collins Type 2 organizers (4-square & "I think I know" charts).
Plan (OPE)
- Check in with teachers on John Collins happenings.
- Prepare for Season's Readings on Wednesday.
- Attend grade-level PLC meetings on Wednesday.
- Attend State Coaches' Cohort meeting on Thursday.
- Help monitor "Hour of Code" Day on Friday.
- Check-in with fifth grade teacher's status for ELA mini-lessons.
Praise
- Co-teaching in fifth grade felt like going home (in a good way).
- Getting news about being able to focus coaching at one place was a most excellent early Christmas present.
Problems
This time of the year seems to be a personal struggle for so many; I want to be sensitive to that and not be blind to the concerns felt by our teachers, students, parents, and even administrators.
