Reading
We are learning the 3 ways to read and practicing our reading stamina every day! Ask your child what the 3 ways to read are and remind them they are all readers! It is also very important to read to your child every night for 10 minutes. This can become a nightly tradition and special time for you both.
3 ways to read
Ask your child what the 3 ways to read are. Show them this poster if they forget!
Book Nook!
Individual book boxes for read to self. Right now we are practicing stamina reading picture books. When we start reading groups, these boxes will have books at each child's level as well as high interest books.
Stamina Chart
As you can see, we have been able to read for 1 minute. Our goal this week is 5 minutes. I think we can do it! Encourage students to show you what read to self looks like at home!
Bono the Monkey Goes to School
Bono has taught our class the rules of going to school. Ask your child to retell you the story of Bono and what rules he learned. We will continue to talk about school personal standards as well:
1. Be respectful
2. Make good choices
3. Solve your problems
Students named our good citizen, Johnny Cash! :) He reminds students what a good listener looks like on the carpet. A major focus is raising your hand to speak. We read Interrupting Chicken and My Mouth is a Volcano and talked about the importance of raising your hand when you want to speak to a group of people.
Math
Our first unit is geometry. We will be exploring 2D and 3D shapes. So far we have sorted shapes in collaborative groups and started exploring each shape and its properties (sides, vertices). A fun way to continue talking about shapes is to have your child find examples in your home.
Writing
We have begun writer's workshop in Room 301! We have been practicing the correct way to color. We have also started working in our own journals to write about topics we choose! Students will have lots of opportunities to write throughout the day. It is one of my favorite times of day!
