Weekly Newsletter

Mrs. Darnell 1st Grade

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone is having a great weekend. The weather this weekend has been so pleasant!

Our spelling words for the week are from Spelling List 5: ask, big, can, cat, drop, lost, ants, snip, flag, stand, of* and to*. There are two dictation sentences.

  1. Ask Dan to clap.

  2. The pan is in the sink.

The spelling words and sentences will be getting more challenging each week. Please make sure your child studies every night. ***For extra online spelling practice visit www.spellingcity.com . Click ‘find a list’ and then search by teacher name: Vae 1stgrade

Phonics Readers

We would like the students to be reading their phonics books fluently (reading like they talk and with expression) before it comes back to school signed.

Please note that your child receives a sticker for each book signed and returned. After 10 stickers he/she has the opportunity to get something from the treasure box.

If your child needs more than one night to practice reading the booklet that is okay. Please have the 1st book returned by Friday and Thursday's reader by Monday.

Math - Addition

In math we are continuing adding doubles, ie. 2+2=4 and 5+5=10. We will begin sending home addition fact practice several times a week to complete for homework.

In science, the students are drawing diagrams and writing facts about bats. At the end of the week we have many fun activities planned as we investigate pumpkins.

*Poetry Presentations, October 31*

Please make sure your child chooses a poem and begins to practice. If your child memorizes his/her poem prior to this date and would like to recite it early please let me know or have them tell me.

Have a great week!

Thank you for all you do!
