Overview of the Seal of Biliteracy and LOC Awards
Grade 12: Seal of Biliteracy
The Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy and Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy with Distinction are awarded to students in grade 12 that have attained high functional and academic levels of listening, speaking, reading and writing proficiency in two or more languages.
This award:
encourages students to study and master languages;
certifies attainment of biliteracy skills;
recognizes the value of language diversity;
provides employers with a method of identifying people with language and biliteracy skills;
provides universities with a method to recognize and give credit to applicants for attainment of high-level skills in languages;
prepares students with skills that will benefit them in the labor market and the global society; and
strengthens intergroup communication and honors the multiple cultures and languages in a community.
FHS students in Grade 12 were notified of the Seal of Biliteracy in December. All those who qualified and showed interest were invited to register at that time. Caregivers who wish to learn more about the Seal of Bilteracy are encouraged to attend the Information Session on February 13th (details above.)
Grades 5, 8 and 12: Language Opportunity Coalition (LOC) Awards
Pathway Biliteracy Awards
The Language Opportunity Coalition Biliteracy and Framingham Public Schools Love of Languages Awards are pathway awards given to students in grades 5, 8 and 12 that celebrate the student's language development trajectory, promotes multiliteracy as an asset and rewards students’ hard work and dedication to becoming multilingual and multiliterate world citizens.
The pathway awards also:
honor the skills our students attain and encourage them to continue their study throughout their schooling (and beyond!) and
strengthen intergroup relationships and honoring the diverse cultures and languages in our community.
Registration
All grade 5 and 8 students in the Dual Language Bilingual Program at Brophy, Potter, Harmony Grove, Barbieri and Walsh are automatically registered for the STAMP test, because it also serves as a program end of grade band assessment.
All grade 5, 8 and 12 students may participate for the opportunity to earn a biliteracy award. To participate, please complete the form below. A member of the Department of Multilingual will work with your student's school to schedule the assessment during the school day.
Please complete the form by February 27th. Thank you!
Grade 5 and 8 recipients of the award will be recognized during the end of year school promotion ceremony by their teacher.
