Teacher-Student Relationships
In our discussions on engagement, one of the key points was teacher-student relationships. John Hattie's calculates an effect size of 0.72, which means it characterized as almost two years growth.
In this book by Fisher, Frey, and Hattie list these ideas to develop positive relationships:
- Display student work
- Share class achievements
- Speak to the accomplishments of all students
- Be sincere in their pride in their students and make sure that pride is based on evidence of student work, not generalized comments
- Look for opportunities for students to be proud of themselves and of other students or groups of students
- Develop parental pride in student accomplishments
- Develop pride in improvement in addition to pride in excellence

WOW-Working on Work
We have discussed Schlechty's Levels of Engagement.
To achieve high levels of engagement Schlechty believes we must work of the designs of our instruction. He includes the following things as important:
- Content and Substance
- Product Focus
- Organization of Knowledge
- Clear and Compelling Product Standards
- Protections from Adverse Consequences for Initial Failures
- Affiliation
- Affirmation
- Choice
- Novelty and Variety
- Authenticity
Each week I will include more information of each of these concepts:
Product Focus. Work that engages students almost always focuses on a product or performance of of significance to students.
Organization of Knowledge. Students are more likely to be engaged when information and knowledge are arranged in clear, accessible ways, and in ways that let students use the knowledge and information to address tasks that are important to them. This doesn’t mean that all content must be inherently interesting or relevant to students: They will learn many important things in school that they may not care about at the time. Content should be organized so access to the material is clear and relatively easy, and the students’ work should have enough attractive qualities to keep them engaged.
