WOHE Library

WOHE library is a great place to be! This year we have Browsing Bins for our picture books. The students love them! I have seen a huge increase in the number of these books checked out. Each class visits once a week for 50 minutes. Within that time we read a book emphasizing a library or communication arts skill. All of the lessons are aligned to CCSS and AASL. The students are then free to check out books. After checkout, the students go to a library center. This year we have some new technology in the library: Ollie, Spero, and LIttle Bits. The students are really enjoying learning how to code and make things work. Fourth Graders have also been participating in Genius Hour, which lets them choose their own topic to research and make something to share their learning. Our library centers include: Buddy Reading, Puzzles, Ipads, Legos, Magazines, Bookmarks, Question of the Week, Silent Reading, Lincoln Logs, Picasso Tiles, Solo Cups, Listening, Big Books, ABC Table Art, K'nex and Computers. I am working on getting a Lego Wall for the library. At the Listening Center the students can view hundreds of ebooks through several sites: We Give Books www.wegivebooks.org/books, Tumblebooks, and Unite for Literacy http://uniteforliteracy.com/ . We now have three OSMOs and three sets of Tiggly shapes, letters and numbers for students to use at the Ipad center.

We are collaborating with the Computer Lab to work on Digital Citizenship lessons with all grade levels. All grade levels participated in the Hour of Code during December. This was a lot of fun. They added Star Wars and Minecraft to the lessons this year! I then sent home a bookmark with the websites for coding so that they could also do them at home. We participated In International Dot Day! The students had a great time creating a dot with something they were going to try. In March, we created a March Madness Bracket of the students favorite books. Each week we voted until we had our winner-Because of Winn-Dixie!

Parent communication continues to be a goal of mine. I have a new website that is updated monthly www.willardorchardhillslibrary.weebly.com. I have a Twitter account @mbryant1123 and we have a Willard District Library Twitter account @tigerlibraries8. I also use Remind to send updates about upcoming library events. Our Book Fair continues to grow each year. This is a great fundraiser for the library which allows us to get a lot of our center materials.

The Summer Open Library was very successful. I opened it up to the entire district last summer. I will continue to provide this service to our students.
