Palmer High School
Principal's Post
Letter from the Principal
Greetings, Palmer Families! I want to begin by officially introducing myself as the newly appointed principal of Palmer High School. My name is Paul Reid and I have been a part of the Palmer High School family for 32 years. I graduated from Palmer High School in 1989. I came back as a teacher in 1999 and have been an assistant principal for the past two years. In all honesty, when I was a student and even a teacher at Palmer, I would have never imagined myself to be the principal of Palmer High. I cannot express how excited I am to be where I am today and I look forward to keeping the tradition of our Palmer Pride alive.
I consider holding this position to be a great honor, and I take the role with a tremendous sense of pride and responsibility. I want every student, staff, parent and all other community members to know that I am available to them, to hear concerns, and to explore possibilities of what Palmer High School is and can be.
I had a conversation with a parent whose daughter is about to graduate. She said, “Man this senioritis thing is real!” My response was, “Oh yes, it is!” Our seniors’ days are very short! As of this week seniors are down to double digit days. Please keep a steady stream of communication with your senior students. Maybe adopt the same slogan that just went up last week in the senior locker bank, “The tassel is worth the hassle”. The last day of school for seniors will be May 2nd, right around the corner.
Spring has sprung, finally! Our Alaskan sunshine is growing longer and more intense daily. Like senioritis for our graduates, the spring fever may strike us all at any time. There are 220 students that are busy with music concerts, art shows, soccer, softball, baseball, and track and field. Please remind your busy students to keep the eye on the prize, their academics. There are plenty of incentives to finish the spring semester with good grades. Fall eligibility for sports and activities, PHARM list in the fall and off campus lunch privileges for next year’s juniors and seniors that carry a 3.0 G.P.A. from this spring.
Happy to be your principal,
Go Moose!
Paul Reid
Senior Send off Assembly
This is our traditional assembly that is symbolic of the last days and even the last minutes of school for our seniors. Each graduate is called down onto the floor and given gifts, paid for with the senior class funds. All the other classes will make the traditional shift in the bleachers with juniors moving into the freshly vacated senior area in the gym. The assembly is capped off with the senior slide show. Tears of joy always accompany the event.

More about end of the semester grading policy.
The cut off for formative late work for seniors was on April 18, 2017. (The reason behind creating a cut off date for teachers is to avoid an avalanche of late work at the last hours of the semester). This allows for streamline grading for teachers to complete the end of semester grades, and affords the time for the students to focus on finals. Remember our summative finals, test and quizzes make up 70 percent or more of student’s final grades. The formative work (homework and other exercises to build on to student’s knowledge base) makes up the additional 30%. All other students late work cut off dates will be two weeks from the last day of school, which is May 5th.
