Tustumena Elementary Newsletter
January 18, 2013
Dear Tustumena Families,
Last Monday was the first time I have experienced a school cancelation because it was too warm, but what a good decision. Water on top of ice is the perfect formula for cars in the ditch and people falling down. The district will announce the “make-up” day soon. It will be either April 19th, or May 23rd. I will include this information in a future newsletter or you can access the district website: kpbsd.k12.ak.us.
(UPDATE as of 1-18-2013)
After receiving feedback from staff at all Central Peninsula schools closed due to weather on January 14, it has been determined the make-up day will be April 19, 2013.
I hope we don’t have adverse weather on February 1st. That is the day of our Tustumena Carnival. From 5:30pm to 8:30pm the gym and multi-purpose room will be full of booths designed for fun and laughs. Our PTO has been working on the details so it will be a great night. They could still use volunteers. If you can help out please call Corrine Johnston @ 953-1838. If you cannot volunteer that night we could still use your help. There is a need for cakes for our cake walk. Please call the school if you can support the PTO by sending in a cake and plan to send your cake in to school the morning of February 1st.
The Kasilof Boys and Girls club will be closing early on the night of the carnival and asks that if you have a child at the club that night, that you plan on picking them up by 5:30pm or better yet, plan on attending the carnival with them. The KB&G Club now has 44 members and is expanding constantly. They now offer other activities besides afterschool homework support (please remember, parents still need to check the homework) such as project weeks. Upcoming projects that are tentatively scheduled for this spring (because my wife helped me volunteer) are water rockets, birdhouses, windmills, and flight simulator. The cost to be a member of the KB&G is $75 per student. Scholarships are available for qualified members. Also if you are interested in “before school club” starting at 7:30am contact Michele Hayman: mhayman@positiveplaceforkids.com.
As I mentioned last week, we will be converting over to an electronic format for our newsletter soon. We want to give families plenty of opportunity to give us input on the availability of internet in homes. If you would like to continue to receive a paper copy of the newsletter, simply write a note or call the school (260-1345) and let us know. Electronic is faster, less expensive, and easier to edit.
We have a Tustumena School Site Team meeting on January 28th at 4pm. The agenda for the meeting is:
· Conversation about gaps in school security
· Soldotna Area Schools Configuration conversation and information
· Upcoming PTA events
· Gather input on how to handle the firewood given to the school from the borough
This year, every quarter, we have a recognition assembly. This quarter students will be recognized for participation in the hoop shoot, geography bee, spelling bee, and science club. These assemblies are intended to be “in house” opportunities for kids to share in each other’s successes. Because students are the “MC’s” it is also an opportunity for them to learn organization skills, public speaking, and technology skills. Our MC’s this month have researched information about staff members and will be presenting this information to the student body. This gives everyone a chance to get to know more about each other and celebrate the fact that we have a great staff and a great school.
Sincerely,
Doug Hayman
Principal
Have a question, get an answer.
If you ever say, "I forgot how to do that." or "I haven't tried to do that since I was in school." then you might consider going to: khanacademy.org. There are thousands of free on-line lessons about almost anything. You can even go back and learn high school geometry, now that it might make sense to you.
Sixth Grade Project
Getting to know the state. Students demonstrated their understanding of the regions of Alaska.
Lynx and Bobcat- What is the difference?
Is there a difference? They look the same to me, but then I am new to these parts.
