Type 1 Diabetes Walk...Thursday May 2nd
Next Thursday, May 2nd we will be raising awareness throughout our school about Type 1 Diabetes or T1D. Living with T1D can be scary and overwhelming at times. Adjusting to life with T1D isn’t always easy, but with help, you establish a “new normal” for your life.
Diabetes is a disorder in which the body has trouble regulating blood glucose, or blood sugar levels. The main two types of diabetes are Type 1 and Type 2
Type 1 Diabetes(T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Insulin is a hormone that enables sugar to enter the bloodstream to be used by cells for energy or stored for later use. Without it, a person with T1D can’t process glucose and their blood sugar levels can get dangerously high. Currently, there is no “cure” for a person with T1D. Managing T1D takes constant work and planning, and never takes a break. Monitoring blood sugar levels, counting carbs and giving insulin are daily tasks for those living with T1D.
Type 2 Diabetes is a metabolic disorder: the pancreas still produces insulin but is unable to use it effectively or the body has developed a resistance to it.
FMES has 6 family members that live with T1D and we are taking this opportunity to honor each of them and their daily trials of living with T1D.
3 Staff Members: Mrs. Young, Mrs. Albaugh, and Mrs. Hines and 3 students.
Please note: We are not collecting money for this effort, only raising awareness. Thank you for your support!
