Principals Message
After finishing up week two the students and staff are well on our way to a very smooth and excited school year!
Parents, I hope you have had a chance to take a look at our new planner this year. The students should be writing what homework, classwork, and activities taking place in their classes and on campus. We are asking for parents to click on our Google Link for our Sullivan Middle School Handbook as a way to check emails and acknowledgment of the handbook. Click here.
Mrs. Gresbrink, our school counselor, is now taking schedule change requests through a Google form. Please make sure to have your student fill this out before 8/31 for a request to change a class. We will do our best to grant the requests however, not all requests can be granted. CLICK HERE FOR THE FORM.
Sullivan continues to develop new and improve our existing programs such as offering higher rigor classes in the areas of math and electives with Integrated Math 1 and Spanish high school classes being offered to our 8th graders. STEM classes being offered to all students with pathways that lead to more advanced STEM classes offered through Palomar at the high school.
PE CLOTHES AND LOCKS: All Sullivan students will be given a lock for their locker in PE. The locks are currently on backorder but should be arriving in the next 2 weeks. We have advised the students they may bring their clothes each day or we are excusing dressing out until we receive the locks.

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress
Parent and Guardian Score Report Letters
Every year, California students take several statewide tests. When combined with other measures such as grades, class work, and teacher observations, these tests give families and teachers a more complete picture of their child’s learning. This past spring, our students in grades 3-8 and 11 took the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment for English Language Arts and Math or the California Alternate Assessment for English Language Arts and Math. Students in grade 5 and 8, and 11 or 12 also completed the California Science Test or the California Alternate Assessment for Science.
California has moved its Student Score Reports to an electronic format that will be delivered online. Therefore, Bonsall Unified School District has ensured that your students’ scores are available in the AERIES Parent Portal.
Your child’s score report provides helpful information about how well they met the expectations of the grade level and where they are doing well or need more support in each subject. Though summative test results are not used to determine whether a student moves on to the next grade, these results can help you and their teachers identify areas of strength and areas where they might need more support. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your school office or child’s teacher to arrange a conference.
Information on Accessing Student Score Reports
CAASPP and ELPAC Student Score Reports can now be accessed electronically via the BUSD Parent Portal. The BUSD Parent Portal is available at AERIES PARENT PORTAL. More information and directions for accessing the BUSD Parent Portal are available here:

PLANNER THIS YEAR! School to home communication.
PARENTS: The planner is how you are able to check your student's work for the day and upcoming assessments and homework. The expectations is that your student should be writing something in every box, even PE. This helps you know what they did during the day and help keep your student on track with class and homework.
Here is the link to our planner and school-wide expectations. CLICK HERE
Please fill out our acknowledgment form about the handbook. CLICK HERE
In the efforts to increase our communication we are sending out a link for parents to click to make sure you have been able to review the planner.

Family and Friends Welcome
Health and Safety
Starting Monday all visitors to the school, including parents, community members, contractors and volunteers will need to scan their Identification into the Raptor System to gain entry to the BHS/SMS campus.
What is the Raptor System?
Raptor is a visitor management system that enhances school security by reading a visitor's drivers’ license (or other approved government issued ID), comparing information against a sex offender and law enforcement databases to alert school administrators and local law enforcement if a match is found. Once cleared through the system, a visitor badge is produced that includes a photo, name of the visitor, date & time, and destination. The Raptor system is designed to permanently replace paper sign ins.
How does Raptor work?
Raptor compares government-issued ID information to a database that contains registered sex offenders from 50 states, law enforcement databases, and local flags placed into Raptor by district or school personnel. In the event of a match, Raptor alerts designated school
officials.
What is the purpose of the Raptor system?
Raptor enhances and automates visitor management. By proactively alerting personnel to certain potential threats, Raptor allows school administrators and, at times local law enforcement, to take appropriate steps to keep our students, employees, and visitors safe. For approved visitors, the system prints visitor badges that include the visitor’s name, photo, date, and destination. Those badges enable school personnel to quickly determine if visitors are in areas where they should, or should not be.
Why is the Bonsall Unified School District using this system?
The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. Raptor will provide a consistent, standardized system to track visitors and volunteers. This is especially useful during emergencies to know who is on campus. The system quickly prints visitor badges that include a photo, the name of the visitor, time & date and destination.
Does the school/District have the right to require visitors, even parents, to produce identification before entering the school?
Yes. In accordance with California Penal Code 627, school officials are required to know who is in the building and why they are there, particularly when a student is involved (e.g. early pickup). School officials need to be able to confirm that an individual has the authority to have access to the student. In addition to requiring visitors to give their name and purpose for visiting, it also requires visitors to present proof of identity.
What types of IDs will work in Raptor?
Raptor is able to scan all U.S. government issued licenses, identification cards, s, Matrícula consular ID cards, permanent resident card, active military cards, and passport ID cards (not the full passport).
What does a visitor do if he/she doesn’t have a government-issued ID?
Visitors without a government-issued ID will be required to meet with site administratration. These individuals will be asked to provide their last name, first name, and date of birth for manual entry into Raptor.
Where can I obtain a Government-issued form of identification?
For a CA License visit a local DMV office or go to: www.dmv.org.
For a Military ID card please go to: www.cac.mil/uniformedservices-id-card/
For a Permanent Resident Card please go to: www.uscis.gov/i-90
It is important to note that all parents have a right to participate in their child’s education. If you have any questions about the Raptor system please contact Ms. James at Angela.James@bonsallusd.com
In regards to COVID-19, Bonsall Unified School District continues to prioritize school safety and in-person learning for all students.
In-person learning will continue as we launch the 2022-2023 school year and Masks and COVID vaccines are NOT required in our District. Students who wear a mask will be supported and respected.
With this in mind, BUSD asks all students to practice frequent handwashing, covering one's mouth when sneezing, and take measures to foster a healthy immune system (i.e. proper nutrition, exercise, and rest).
In turn, BUSD will continue to place an emphasis on the proper sanitation of all District schools and facilities and employ various COVID-19 mitigation strategies.
If your student tests positive for COVID-19 please report the result to the school and know they must stay at home for a minimum of 5 days. During this time we encourage you to monitor your students for their well-being and return them to school once they are symptom-free and test negative.
BUSD is and will remain in compliance with all county and state mandates regarding COVID-19.
