MMA Montessori Moments

August 12th, 2019

Big picture

Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! I hope that everyone got a chance to rest, love, and learn this summer. It was wonderful to see those families who were able to attend our Sneak-a-Peek.

Thank you for committing to MMA and to each other. Please continue to support each other by welcoming new families and reintroducing yourselves to returning families. Thank you for supporting MMA financially, through volunteering, and by spreading positive words about us throughout the community. I am grateful to serve such dedicated families and to be surrounded by an excellent team of professional, intelligent, passionate, and caring individuals.

There is much to look forward to this school year, including: getting to know new staff members; working with familiar faces in new roles; implementing revised curriculum; and, meeting new families.

Thank you for entrusting your children with us. As always, please contact myself or our Assistant Director, Ms. Lana, with your questions, concerns, and comments. I look forward to working with each of you this school year. See you soon!

MMA Cross Country

If you missed the sign-ups at our Sneak-a-Peek, your student, 6th-9th grade, can still sign-up in the office to join our cross country team. Our team is coached by Coach Hyrum, of whom has been our coach for many years. In order to participate, students must have a physical before the first meet (date TBD) and pay $60 to our office. The fee covers a cross country shirt. Practice starts this Wednesday, right after school! We hope to see you there!

Junior High Fees

Junior High fees are the same as last year and can be paid online here. If your family requires assistance in paying these fees, please complete a fee wavier found on the forms and documents page of our website and submit it to René. All parts of the form should be filled in before submitting it and accompanied by required supporting documentation.

Finishing Enrollment

In order for your student to come to school, we need all documents (i.e birth certificate, immunization, and vision screening (Kindergarten)). If your student shows up for school without these documents, we will have to send them home.

Back to School Schedule

Students in 1st through 9th grade begin school on Monday, August 12th. Early childhood, including kindergarten, students begin one week later on Monday, August 19th. The school calendar can be accessed here.

The front doors open to students at 8:15am and students are expected to be in class and ready to learn by 8:30am. Junior high students should enter through the double doors of the addition. This door will lock promptly at 8:30am, which means any student entering the building after that time will need to enter through the main building and be marked as tardy in the front office.

Checking out your student

We value your children's safety above all else. It is for this reason that we will be requiring you to present your photo identification every time you come into school to check your child out. This will help our new office staff get to know everyone and keep students going home with the correct individuals.

If you need to change your "release" permissions that state who your child is allowed to leave with or change your contact information, you can update that yourself online after you get an Aspire account by following the directions on our website.

Carpool Map and Flow

Please check out the carpool map to see the flow of how to drop off and pick up your children on Monday. Please always pull forward and obey the directions of the crossing guards. Drivers should never get out of their cars during carpool time. If you need to run into school for any reason, especially if you have to sign in a late child, please park in a parking stall.

Please model grace and courtesy for our children during this process. Note that there are only two areas where students can get in or out of the car. Children should only exit the car on the side of the car with the sidewalk. This plan has been created and approved by our local police department to keep children safe and traffic flowing around school.

Never be on your phone and always be alert. Our children's lives are at stake. Thank you for the smiles!

Kindergarten Information (KEEP Assessment)

The KEEP assessments are happening this week. If you have not signed your student up, please do so immediately!

The state of Utah is continuing its assessment for all kindergarten age students. To allow us the time necessary to accomplish this we will be using August 12 through August 16 for assessments. There will not be school during this week for kindergarten students. Kindergarten and preschool students will have their first day of school on Monday August 19th. We are asking all parents (preschool students as well) to sign up for 1 time slot for your child. During the hour they are with us we will do the assessment as well as give each student an orientation to the classroom and playground. The preschool students will only come for 30 minutes for an orientation.

HOUSE of Children Pre-School Spots

A few spots in our early childhood program, the HOUSE of Children, just opened. We finalized our partnership with the Householder Group, who will run the pre-school housed at MMA. Please email if you would like to register your 3 or 4 year old for Montessori pre-school. Spread the word to your friends and family who may be interested.

Student Dress Code

There are no changes to the school’s Dress Code Policy, Dress Code Guidelines, or Dress Code Samples. School spirit t-shirts and other accessories are able for purchase. Remember that school spirit t-shirts that say MMA are appropriate to wear and meet the dress code policy.

Hoodies may only be worn as outerwear outside of the school and should have a school spirit t-shirt or collared shirt underneath. Students will be asked to remove their hoodies and other outerwear while inside the building. Students have time in the morning and during scheduled transitions to put these items in their lockers and still be on time for class. Better yet, let's encourage students to not bring these tempting items into the building at all.

Calling for Committee Members

In June the Board approved funds to replace trees that were cut down during the construction of our addition. Please email if you are interested in meeting to create and propose a plan for how we will restore our environment.
