May 1, 2022
Greetings Challenger Middle School families and students,
Happy May! We are in our final month of the 21-22 school year. Can you believe it?
We have finished ACAP testing. We are so proud of our students and the work they have put in this school year. Next week, students will take their STAR Reading and Math tests. This assessment will give us a better understanding of our students' academic growth for the 2021-22 school year. The STAR data will also guide our decision-making as we plan for the 2022-23 school year.
We have our school dance on Friday, May 6th from 7:00-9:00. Below is more information in regards to the dance and our spirit week.
Teacher appreciation week is this week. Thank you to our amazing teachers and all the work they put in every day to make sure our students succeed in and out of the classroom. See below for more information about how you show our teachers some love this week.

Summer Reading 2022
Huntsville City Schools is very pleased to share information regarding the Summer Reading Program, a district-wide effort to encourage reading for enjoyment. Reading during the summer months is an important opportunity for students to stay engaged and to develop a life-long commitment to reading and learning.
The Huntsville City Schools Summer Reading program information for grades 6-12 is now available. We are asking for your assistance in spreading the word about this wonderful opportunity for students. Please become familiar with the program expectations and subsequently communicate the information to students and parents in a timely manner. This year, our focus is student choice. Therefore, Secondary Programs is offering student choice in selecting a novel that meets the criteria outlined in the attached packet. The goal is for students to read during the summer.
To promote the summer reading program, you may consider posting the information, with an emphasis on the "book talk" requirement, in a highly visible area within your respective schools as all students are required to complete a "book talk" on their selected novel. Students can share their "book talk" with peers or submit for a grade by Friday, August 26, 2022. This grade should appear in the 1st nine-week grading period.
The Summer Reading program information is attached for your immediate reference. Additionally, the information will be posted on the HCS webpage for students and parents and can be found by following these directions:
• Hover over “Department” tab
• Click “Learning Supports” link
• Click “2022 Summer Reading Information" link
The Summer Reading 2022 information should be disseminated to students (inclusive of uploading via Schoology) no later than Friday, April 29, 2022. For accountability purposes, students will have to sign for the receipt of materials. Teachers should have students sign a copy of the class roster/list printed from PowerSchools and maintain the document for their records.
The file linked below gives more information about summer reading requirements.

- This is your first high school grade. Whatever you earn will transfer with you.
- If you fail, you will take this semester class again in 9th grade.
- Do it right the first time!
- Take advantage of the 1 period a week we give you to work in Edgenuity at school.
- If you are absent on a Tuesday, plan on working at least 45 minutes from home to catch up.
- It's a good idea to work ahead in this course from home. Make some time for this class each day. (15 mins) Do not procrastinate!
- If you have questions, ask your teacher. Don't get behind because you didn't ask questions.
