The Lightning Flash

supporting Lightning hockey & promoting girl's youth hockey

Coach's Corner

GRGers,

The 2015-2016 season of Lightning Hockey is upon us! We hope you welcome the Lightning Flash newsletter as an effort to celebrate girl's hockey in Grand Rapids and Greenway... Equally worth celebrating is our record number of registered girl's hockey players -- with more than 100 youth hockey girls from 8U/ beginner through 15U! This record stands as a testament to the wide support of hockey and young female athletes in our community.

The GRG high school team has been underway for a few weeks and in the opening game of the season at Bemidji the ladies skated away with victories in the junior varsity and varsity games 9-0 and 6-2 respectively. We hope you'll come out and support the high school team during the season -- look to grglightning.com or your hockey raffle calendars for the schedule of upcoming opportunities to watch the game at its highest local level. Finally, in the entertaining roller coaster that is a youth hockey season, please take time to appreciate all the small things that make our game great...

Cheers to you, your daughter, and a great season of hockey!

Community Involvement

The Lightning continue to be involved in a variety of community volunteer activities, learning at an early age the importance of giving back. Players have volunteered with the Pedals Re-purposed program through the Cap Baker Lions Club, the Eagles booth at the Itasca Co. Fair and helped community members shop at the Open Door Coat Rack. Lessons in giving of time and talents. Building strong, caring and engaged young women on and off the ice!

The Wellness Window

With the beginning of the season, the Coaching staff shared some great information at the parent mixer regarding the importance of good healthy habits. We all know that It is so important to get good sleep and eat healthy all the time but for our athletes it is key to remaining healthy and keeping things in balance during the busyness of the hockey season. GRG players are participating in weekly weight training through the High School. GICH Orthopedics and PT are available to provide same day service to our athletes, should there be an injury. We are lucky to again have an Athletic Trainer assigned to the Lightning to provide on-sight care of our GRG'ers!

New Lightning gear/clothing for sale at all GRG home games...Check it out and support girls hockey!

Captains' Corner

Senior Captains Savanna Holum and Maddi Peart will be Leading the GRG team this year and will be assissted by Juniors, Maddy "Gordy" Illikainen and Ali Geislinger. Here's a note from Captain Maddi, welcoming all to come out and cheer on your GRG Lightning!

...We started with two weekends of scrimmages. The first was home and we realized what it's going to take to be one of the top teams this year. The second was in Hibbing and it was good to see how hard everyone was willing to work. I think we all have high expectations for our team this year, we need to come back and make up for where we ended last year. It won't be easy, but we have to keep the team motivated and working hard all the time. We have a tough schedule, with all the city teams we play, but it will be good for us to constantly see that we can't slow down. Everyone's excited for overnights because that's always a time for team bonding. We have already played our first game against Bemidji winning 6-2 -- everyone was happy to see both JV and Varsity working hard. The lines are constantly changing with people fighting to play varsity. Everyone is really stepping up being that we have less numbers. We have a big weekend coming up playing Roseville and Irondale, so we are excited to see how everyone does then. ~Maddi
