Homeostasis

And the human body systems!

What is Homeostasis?

Homeostasis is the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes. In other words, it is the balance of your body.

About Homeostasis

The concept of homeostasis is widely used, in physiology and psychology, to identify what seems to be a general attribute of living organisms: the tendency to maintain and restore certain steady states or conditions of the organism. An obvious example is that of body temperature, which in the human tends to fluctuate only in a narrow range about the value 98.6° F. When the temperature rises above the normal range, corrective reflexes (perspiration, reduced metabolism, etc.) go into action to restore the steady state. Persistent deviation may initiate other actions (moving into the shade, plunging into water, etc.). If body temperature drops, other corrective actions are observed.

Homeostasis and the digestive system

With the exception of oxygen from the respiratory system and sunlight (for vitamin D formation) from the integumentary system, we obtain all of the materials we need for growth and energy from the digestive system. It is through the digestive system that we obtain water, nutrients and other essential building blocks for metabolism. However, as you know from day to day eating habits, the input into the digestive system can change greatly in amount, frequency and content. So it is up to the digestive system to have complex processes in place that help maintain homeostasis at various levels in the body.

The foods we eat

Big image
We eat food everyday because it is important to our body. There are different types of food. Each type of food performs specific functions in our body. To stay healthy, we are advised to eat food which contains a combination of many types. Some food can give us energy while others can make us grow. A combination of essential foods is called a balanced diet. It is generally believed that you are what you eat. People usually talk of having a balanced diet. What this means should here be explained. In the first place, diet is what a person eats each day. Balanced diet means eating the right kind of food in the right quantities. Eating the right kind of food could now be easily determined from what we know of food items. But to determine the right quantities of food to eat is not easy. This is a good point for discussion. To get round the problem, it is possible to find out what people who are not healthy eat and compare this with what they actually need. The state of health of a person could be linked to the type of food the person usually takes. Junk foods and processed foods are an example of negative foods. Junk food and processed foods in America are one of the most reasons why people get heart disease. These types of foods can cause hearts attacks, heart disease, rapid weight gain, diabetes and many more. Junk food also raises cholesterol, which raises risk to heart disease and heart attacks. Junk food and processed foods make our body's homeostasis go out of wack and totally messes up the digestive system. The foods we eat can change our body forever in ether a positive way or negative way.
