Chequamegon High School Quiz Bowl: 2020 Season
The Chequamegon High School Quiz Bowl team is coached by Michelle Byholm. Regardless of the pandemic, they have been able to compete this year. The format has changed due to safety procedures, but students are finding it just as competitive as it was prior to the pandemic. They compete against Butternut, Drummond, Maple (Northwestern), Ashland, Mellen, Northwoods, South Shore, Superior, Phillips, Washburn (no team this year), and Winter.
In a regular "normal" season, teams face off in a 45-minute virtual session. All teams are asked forty questions worth 5 points each. Teams are given 15 seconds to answer each question. Teams can choose to answer or pass the question within the 15 second time period. In the first 5 seconds, a team can ask for the question to be repeated or a word spelled for clarification. If a question is answered incorrectly or not at all, the team loses 5 points. If a team answers a question passed to them correctly, they earn 5 points. Teams answering a passed question are not penalized for an incorrect answer.
This year the format was a little different. Teams are meeting separately to answer a set of 20 questions. Only two teams compete against one another and answer the same set of questions. The team that gets the highest score wins. Teams still have the option to pass a question. If the question is passed, it is simply skipped and they are asked the next question.
Here are this year's participants:
- Mitchell Hecimovich Sr.
- Abby Herbst Sr.
- Lydia Kelnhofer Sr.
- Anna Wagner Sr.
- Vinny Kohler Sr.
- Audrina Morris So.
Chequamegon is currently 3-7 on the year.

Class Act Charter School submitted by Paula Zwicke and Travis Augustine
On December 10 and 11, students spent the better part of two days in an alder brush swamp, which will be sheared in a few weeks. They collected photos and observations of winter vegetation for identification and details of the wetland as it appears now, so they can compare it in the spring. In this photo (to the left), Gii measures the cedar tree, Cory records the GPS coordinates of this site, and Sam studies a fallen branch from this old tree.
