World Kindness Day is Wednesday, November 13th
“Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” Princess Diana
World Kindness Day is celebrated on November 13th. On this day, participants attempt to make the world a better place by celebrating and promoting good deeds and pledging acts of kindness as individuals or groups.
Ideas for Kindness Day, or any day:
1. Say good morning to everyone on your way to school and good evening when returning home.
2. Send a kind text to a family member: Grandparents, Uncles and Aunts or Mom and Dad will love it!!
3. Eat lunch with someone new.
4. Hold the door open for someone.
5. Say "Please" and "Thanks".
6. Go through your possessions and donate to charity.
7. Make your bed or take out the trash.
8. Write a note, postcard or letter to someone special in your life (and mail it even if you live with them).
9. Volunteer somewhere in the community.
10. Spend time with someone who might be lonely.
We are sure you could think of many other ideas!!!!!

Box Top Collection
Our next Box Top submission is on March 1st. Please continue to send Box Tops to school so we can include them in the second and final submission of the year. Students can drop them off in the main office or the library. Box Tops can be used to pay library fines as they are worth .10 each!
Dear 6th Grade Parents,
The Iowa Department of Public Health and the Iowa Immunization Law require that all students entering 7th grade have both a Meningococcal vaccine and a Tdap (Tetunus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis/whooping cough) booster before school starts this fall.
The Tdap requirement has been put in place since the 2013/14 school year and requires the booster dose of Tetunus, Diphtheria and acellular Pertussis containing vaccine for students entering 7th grade, regardless of the interval since the last Tetunus/Diphtheria containing vaccine. Pertussis (whooping cough) is a very contagious disease that causes violent coughing fits that make it hard to breathe.
Meningococcal disease is a life threatening illness that is caused by bacteria that infects the brain, blood and spinal cord. It easily spreads in crowded settings. The vaccine will be required prior to both the 7th and 12th grades.
All students entering 7th grade must have proof of having both the Meningococcal and the Tdap vaccines before school starts in August, unless the student has a Certificate of Immunization Exemption.
You may get these shots at your doctor or possibly at the Siouxland District Health Department. Their phone number is 712-279-6119.
There will be NO grace/extension period for the implementation of this requirement. 6th grade complete this requirement now and turn record into school.

School Closure Information
The winter in Iowa provides us with some days that make it a challenge to hold classes at the regular time, and sometimes we must close our schools early, late, or for the entire day. As you know, our weather is not only challenging at times, it is constantly changing.
Please remember that parents and guardians have the right to make the decision to keep their child home on any day that they feel it is unsafe for their student to be in school because of weather conditions. If you believe the weather provides a sincere reason why you may have to keep your students at home, or take your student home when classes are scheduled to continue, you as a parent or guardian will simply need to contact your child’s school to let them know.
If a decision is made on the day of school to cancel classes or to have a late start, a call goes out at 6:00 AM to all parents and guardians. Parents can also check the following sites for closure information.
1. GovDelivery https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/IAEDU6039/subscriber/new?qsp=CODE_RED
2. District’s Facebook https://www.facebook.com/SiouxCityCommSchools
3. District’s Twitter @siouxcityschool
4. All media outlets
If the schools are dismissed early or if school is called off entirely, there will be no evening activities. If you have before and after school care, please check with your provider about their procedures.
Winter Weather Information
With cold weather upon us, it’s important to plan for inclement weather. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder weather. Suggested apparel includes a warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves. If a student needs access to these cold weather apparel items, please contact the school office.
Even during the winter season, the District allows recess and outdoor activities to continue as usual. However, if a student does not have appropriate winter clothing, a school official may ask a student to remain inside.
When the atmosphere reaches a temperature that feels like 15 degrees or less, then all students are kept inside for recess/activities. The “feel” of the temperature is determined based on the National Weather Service’s report.
Thank you for helping us keep students safe and warm this season.
Handle With Care Initiative
Handle with Care Initiative Launches in Sioux City
The Sioux City Community School District is launching a new initiative, Handle with Care, in partnership with the Sioux City Police Department (SCPD). This initiative is part of an effort to further advance work to support the emotional needs of students. Handle with Care is an alert system set up to notify the District any time a police officer is dispatched to a student’s home. SCPD will NOT share any details about the call or police activity. The alert will only prompt the District officials to take actions to “handle the student with care” in the days following the call. School staff that closely interact with the student involved will be prompted to observe the student’s behavior. If the student exhibits signs that indicate distress or concern, a professional school counselor will support the student’s emotional needs. The Handle with Care program will launch on December 1, 2019. If you have questions about the program, please call:
· Jen Gomez, Sioux City Community School District: 712-279-6075
· Sgt. Jeremy McClure, Sioux City Police Department: 712-279-4981
· Sgt. Jeremy McClure, Sioux City Police Department: 712-279-4981

Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
