War in Afghanistan
The War in Afghanistan was in response to the 9/11 attacks, and was initiated in 2001. It is against the Taliban, Al Qaeda, and Osama Bin Laden, and the war was technically ended in 2014, although there is still hostilities, even though Bin Laden was assassinated. Troops are currently be pulled out/have been pulled out.
The War in Iraq
The Iraq War was an endeavor by a "United States led coalition" to usurp Saddam Hussein from power. They were successful and liberated Iraq and Kuwait in 2011.
Barack Obama
Barack Obama won the 2008 election and was inaugurated on January 20th, 2009. He was a democratic president, and supported legislation such as bank bailouts, auto bailouts, and healthcare reform. He was also the first African-American president.
Patriot Act
After the 9/11 attacks an emphasis on safety from terrorism became prevalent, and in 2011 the Patriot Act was passed, changing and strengthening airport security.
Economy
The U.S economy is still much better than it was in 2008, during the Great Recession, but unemployment is relatively high. The Great Recession has had a profound effect on the economy, and a large amount of time is needed for a full recovery, but the amount of time that has passed made good work.
