Red Ribbon Week at Brentwood

In 1988, the first National Red Ribbon Week was organized by the National Family Partnership (NFP), proclaimed by the U.S. Congress and chaired by Nancy Reagan. Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States. Red Ribbon Week began after the murder of DEA agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena in 1985. Camarena had been working undercover in Guadalajara, Mexico for over four years.

The week we come back from Fall Break, October 19-23, is our Red Ribbon Week here at Brentwood. Home School Advisor Mrs. Nay has been busy preparing our "Respect Yourself Live Drug Free" campaign. On Friday students can wear blue and gold or Pacer's gear.

Once again this year, we will have a Pledge Wall where each student will sign the pledging to stay drug free. This is located in our front hallway. Please use this week to talk with your children at home as well!

Value of the Month Student ~ September

The value of the month of September is "Dignity & Self-Esteem" for the Plainfield Community School Corporation. 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Hamlin, nominated her student, Oriona Dickson for this value award. Mrs. Hamlin wrote, "Oriona demonstrates dignity and self-esteem on a daily basis. Oriona is extremely proud of her accomplishments. She takes learning seriously and is always pushing herself to learn more. She takes it upon herself to use online programs at home to further her learning. When presented with a challenge, Oriona tackles it with pride rather than becoming discouraged."

Important Notice to ALL PARENTS regarding Breakfast at School

It has been brought to our attention that many children are excited to find out Brentwood offers breakfast at school. However, not all parents WANT their children to eat and pay for this option.

IF you do not wish for your child to buy breakfast at school, please discuss this with them. We cannot monitor OR restrict this at school.

If a child says they have NOT had breakfast we will never turn them away. Having a healthy breakfast is EXTREMELY important for all of our students here at Brentwood Elementary School!

Thank you for your assistance in this matter!

Staff MVP of the Week ~ Mrs. Gina Christian, Instructional Assistant

This week's Staff Most Valuable Player is Instructional Assistant, Mrs. Gina Christian. Mrs. Christian has been an Instructional Assistant at Brentwood for the past 9 years. She was a Stay-at-Home Mom before that for 21 years, while also working as an Interior Designer and as an Assistant Art Director.

2nd Grade teacher, Mrs. Henry had the following to say about Mrs. Christian, "It is a pleasure to work with Gina! She is a true team player! She is very thorough with the kids and holds them all to high expectations. We are lucky to have her as part of the team!"

Mrs. Christian grew up in Plainfield and actually attended Brentwood Elementary School as a child! All four our her sons went to Brentwood too!

Some of Mrs. Christian's Faves:
Color ~ Aqua
TV Show ~ Once Upon a Time
Book ~ Inkspell
Music ~ Classic Rock
Movie ~ A Knight's Tale (she's watched it a ZILLION times!)
Restaurant ~ El Meson
Candy ~ Chocolate

When she isn't working Mrs. Christian enjoy hiking. She loves going on day trips to museums and historical sites, and has started painting again. "Each state park I have visited has had something interesting about it and has made for a most memorable summer~" Mrs. Christian says.

3rd Grade Teacher, Mrs. Davis, says, "Gina is hard working, has high expectations (academic and behavior) for the students she works with, and I can always count on her to complete activities with students the way I have asked her to complete them. Gina has a great attitude, and always has a smile."

When asked about working with students throughout all these years she says, "I love how funny they can be and could not have made it through some tough times without their wonderful hugs!"

Advice to Parents of Elementary School Parents: "Slow down, turn everything off and read to your child before bed. Not only are you giving them your undivided attention, but that is how you make good readers!"

In closing, close friend and 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Mayo had these words to say about Mrs. Christian: "Gina is such a great person to work with! She always takes initiative in the classroom and loves on the students just as much as me! She has become a great friend as well. I can't imagine teaching first grade without her!"

Transportation Arrival & Dismissal Info

Student Arrivals (car riders):

All car riders arriving in the morning should be dropped off in our car rider lane NOT in our Visitor Parking lot. This ensures they are not crossing over any traffic.

Late Arrivals:

If you child is being dropped off late an adult must come into the office and sign them in.

Student Arrivals (bus riders):

If your child rides the bus to school and will be eating breakfast in the cafeteria please talk to them about going straight to the cafeteria to get their breakfast. This will give them the most time to eat as healthy of a breakfast as possible.

Dismissal Changes:
  • If you need to change your child's dismissal instructions the best way to do this is to send a signed note to your child's teacher.
  • If this is impossible please call the office NO LATER THAN 2:30 p.m. to ensure the dismissal change gets to your child's teacher in a timely matter.

If you are permanently changing how your child goes home or if you move please notify our office at 317-839-4802, as well as Transportation at 317-838-3632, and submit a new Transportation Form to the office.

Volunteer News & Information:

Chaperones and classroom volunteers play an important role in schools. Without them, creative educational experiences inside and outside of the classroom would be more difficult to accomplish. In order to keep students safe, chaperones and classroom volunteers must fill out the following forms:

  1. Volunteer Background Agreement
  2. Volunteer Confidentiality Agreement (ask at front office the first time you come in to volunteer)
  3. Read & understand our Emergency Procedures Handout (ask for your copy at the front office)
  4. Read & understand our "Facts about Bullying" handout (ask for your copy at the front office)

Some guidelines to follow when volunteering at Brentwood (please refer to our handbook for more):

  • You may only take photos of your own child. Photos may not be taken of friends or other students and should NEVER be posted on social media sources without the consent of the classroom teacher and the other parents.
  • You should avoid taking or making phone calls while supervising students unless for an emergency or communication is needed on a field trip.
  • You should not bring other children along on a field trip.
  • You must immediately report incidents or suspected incidents of bullying, physical, and/or verbal aggression to a teacher.
