December 2022 Edition

Here at Silver Lake, it's always the most wonderful time of the year!!

Weather changing...

As winter is coming, please ensure students are coming to school with coats, hats, gloves, etc so they can be warm. Doors will continue to open at 8:30am, regardless of temperatures so plan accordingly. Thank you for all you do for our Silver Lakers!!

Positive Office Referrals from last month!!

Cuyahoga Falls City Schools utilizes PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) as a way to focus on the positive behaviors and how to change behaviors by using positive reinforcement. This goes hand-in-hand with our code of conduct that provides discipline procedures for negative behaviors. In wanting to help reinforce the positive behaviors students exhibit, Silver Lake Elementary is using a Positive Student Referral System where staff members can refer a student to the principal but for positive reasons.

Congratulations to these Silver Lakers on their Positive Referral to my office!

November Top Tigers

Each month two students will be recognized at a Board Meeting for being Top Tigers. Top Tigers are exemplary in their character traits and their effort. What an honor it is to be recognized by your teachers at a Board Meeting. This month, students were recognized by our 5th Grade Team. Proud of these Silver Lakers for all of their Black Tiger Pride!!

Friends' Feast

November 16th we held our Friends' Feast during lunch. Each lunch has an older grade and a younger grade and we paired up with buddies. Each student was able to design their own placemat. Reviews were high for the food that was provided free to all students throughout the district. Home and School League helped in a big way by getting volunteers to help decorate, to help serve our kiddos as well as arrange for desserts to be donated. Our kiddos shined in their Black Tiger Pride in working with their buddies to make the event so memorable!

All City Choir Concert

2nd Graders represented Silver Lake so well this year. They did "The Rainbow Connection" and rocked the house! Thank you to Mrs. Shelby Miller for all her hard work with our students!! The concert concluded with a whole-group rendition of "Roar".

Veterans Day

On Veterans Day, 5th grade had a very special visitor present to the entire grade level about an alumni of Silver Lake Elementary. Students were very engaged in the presentation and showed a lot of Black Tiger Pride.

Traffic Reminders

Between the hours of 7:30am and 4:00pm Overlook Rd, which is at the front of the school, is a one-way street heading south and Millboro Rd, which is at the back of the school, is a one-way street heading north.

If you are dropping off your students and stop in front of a fire hydrant, please be sure to not leave your vehicle. If you want to leave your vehicle, remember to think about safety and not block a hydrant.

Kdg parents dropping off and picking up their students. Avoid the bus area in the back. The bushes to the fence is the area we need to keep clear. The area in front of the field and after the fence is where we ask parents to park.

We Have The Best Custodial Staff!!

I may be a little biased but we have the best two custodians in the district!! No matter if it is Mr. Oscar or Mr. Dan, they are always willing to help and go above and beyond to ensure SLE looks amazing and care for all of our Silver Laker kiddos.

Thank you to Mr. Oscar and Mr. Dan for all you do for our building, staff, and students!!!

4th Grade Glaciers

I had the pleasure of being in Mrs. Dougherty's room when she was having a fun lesson on Glaciers where students looked at physical models of what happens with glaciers. Kids were very attentive and engaged. #BlackTigerPride

Playground Use Outside of School Hours

Before School, we ask that no students be on the playground sets as there is not any supervision outside until the bell rings at 8:30am to allow students into the building.

After school, once students have joined their parents/guardians and are in their care and under their supervision, students may be on the playground sets. Again, this is an issue with supervision and we do not want anything to happen to our little Black Tigers.

Parents with students picking up younger siblings (HS or MS students): please have conversations regarding how they should not be playing on the equipment when our day is still in session. I understand that older students get out earlier but that becomes a disruption to the end of the day here. I appreciate all of you help with this matter.

B.L.A.M.

B.L.A.M. stands for Be Like Aunt Martha and is a challenge to utilize respect and to make a difference in the lives of others. Learn more about B.L.A.M. in a slideshow on the school's website. The main components of B.L.A.M. are 1) Love Unconditionally 2) Smile Daily 3) Never Give Up and 4) Always Do Your Best. The 14th of each month is an opportunity for all to be reminded to make a difference for someone and that differences don't have to be huge but can be seemingly small things that add up to be a big difference. Things like holding a door, or picking up dropped items or even smiling at someone or saying hello.

Student Council Canned Food Drive

The Student Council run Food Drive was such an amazing success. In 3 days, we were able to collect over 1700 pieces to take to Good Neighbors. The highest 3 classes had their names put into a drawing in order to pie Mr. Dulka in the face. Mrs. Redeker's homeroom collected the most, and so 5 students were selected, Mrs. Balan's was next and so 3 students were selected and Mrs. Miller's was next and so 1 student was selected. It was a fun assembly to celebrate a great 3 day drive. The message: alone we can only do so much, but together we can accomplish great things. Thank you to all who donated!

Silver Lake Staff Spotlight

Meet our 5th Grade Team

Get to know: Ms. Meredith Koch

Growing up in Cleveland Heights, I was given many opportunities to begin developing my love for teaching. As a teenager, my friends and I ran a very popular babysitting business. At the same time, I was a lifeguard during the summers, which included teaching both group and private swimming lessons to children. During the winters, I worked as an ice guard at the skating rink, assisting with group lessons there, as well. Later, in college, I taught private swimming lessons and worked in a daycare/preschool owned by friends. Although I began college as a nursing student, I quickly realized that teaching was the right career path for me because I would be doing what I truly enjoyed. Out of college, I worked as a preschool teacher for Head Start. After marrying my husband, (also a teacher) I began as a long-term sub in Cuyahoga Falls, and soon after, was offered a full time position at Silver Lake Elementary where I am still a proud member of the Silver Lake family. Thank you for sharing your awesome children with me!

Get to know: Mrs. Cariann Redeker

I have been a teacher in Cuyahoga Falls for 25 years! I graduated from the University of Akron, including my masters in Educational Administration. I have been at Silver Lake for 24 years in the same classroom!

I am married to Brent and together we share Griffin(24), Grant(21), Tyler(21), Harrison(18) and many pets. Brent and I love to attend live concerts and vacation around the world. This past summer, we went to Hawaii.

Meet our School Counselor

Get to know: Ms. Jennifer Joslin

Hello! I am the school counselor at Silver Lake. This is my 22nd year in the Cuyahoga Falls City School District but my 1st year at Silver Lake Elementary. I taught at Preston Elementary for 7 years and I was a counselor at Richardson and Price Elementary Schools for the past 14. I currently travel between Silver Lake Elementary and Richardson.

I grew up in Twinsburg. I attended the University of Akron to earn my Bachelors Degree as an intervention specialist. I then went back to to the U of Akron to receive my Masters Degree in the area of School Counseling.

When I am not focused on school, I enjoy taking walks, going to barre class, listening to music, eating out, all types of music, and watching movies. I enjoy spending time with my significant other, my parents, and my niece and nephew. I love dogs!

I am excited to be at Silver Lake Elementary School!

Meet our School Psychologist

Get to know: Mr. Franklin Ziccardi

I am a graduate of Cuyahoga Falls City Schools and this will be my 2nd year working in the district. I completed my internship in school psychology during the 2018-2019 school year in Cuyahoga Falls. I then went and worked in Massillon City Schools from 2019-2022. This will be my 5th year as a practicing school psychologist and I am excited to return to the district that I grew up in.

My wife and I will be celebrating our one year anniversary this December. We have a spoiled golden retriever and cat. We are both big sports fans and nothing beats cheering on my alma mater, The Ohio State University, on Saturdays.
