SEPTEMBER Newsletter
A Note from Mrs. Sisson
Dear Students, Parents, Guardians,
Welcome to a new and exciting year at La Plata High School!! I hope each of you had a great summer! I am the College and Career Advisor and I'm super excited to be working with each of you this up-coming year!!
The Career Center houses information and resources for ALL grade level students to explorer college and career paths, apprenticeships, trade/technical/vocational schools , military careers, scholarships and financial aid, job opportunities, as well as volunteer opportunities. Representatives and admission counselors will be scheduled to visit our school throughout the year. Our goal is to help each student reveal their strengths, aspirations, and goals, in order to enable them to make confident and conscious decisions about post-secondary plans.
Each grade level will be using Xello this year. Xello is a career exploration tool to help students discover their post-secondary options. Students can access Xello through the Clever app which is in the StudentVue portal. I strongly encourage students to click on Matchmaker. Matchmaker asks about your likes and dislikes and then suggests careers based on your interests. There are three phases in the quiz. Your matches will be updated as you complete each phase.
Students, parents and/or guardians need to check and read your email for important updates and information as well as, visit our La Plata High School webpage under the College and Career Center. It is here you will find all the information and resources needed to prepare and plan for life after high school. Every Friday, I will be sending out weekly updates.
The College & Career Center is located on the main level in the Counseling Office. I strive to connect with students by recognizing their individualism and unique attributes, and I am eager to navigate them on their journey of discovery. Students are encouraged to see me before and after school, during activity period, lunch period, or by appointment. Parents can reach me by email or phone to schedule an appointment between 7:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Warm regards,
Olivia Sisson

NACAC NOVEMBER VIRTUAL COLLEGE FAIR
Sunday, Nov 12, 2023, 01:00 PM
If an in-person tour is not available, colleges usually have virtual tours available. Please check the college’s website for information about what types of tours they offer and how you can register for them. Ideally, touring the college campuses you are considering is the best way to find out if a college is for you. However, you may not have the opportunity to personally visit a college campus and…just because you may want to attend a school out of state doesn’t mean you have to spring for plane tickets to every university on your Top 10 list.
Many of the college websites also provide a virtual tour of their campus….be sure to check it out!
To help whittle down the choices, there are also websites where you can find VIRTUAL COLLEGE TOURS!!!
You can take a virtual tour at: www.campustours.com OR www.youvisit.com
NCAA INFORMATION
Students interested in competing in NCAA sports need to register with the
NCAA Eligibility Center.
Students can begin to register starting their 9th grade year and should register as soon as possible. There is information on the NCAA Eligibility Center website to help guide you through the registration process. There are three account options, and you can choose the one that’s right for you!!!
- OPTION 1: Free Profile Page Account
- OPTION 2: Amateurism-Only Certification Account
- OPTION 3: Academic and Amateurism Certification Account
More information is available on the website to help you decide which account is right for YOU!
You will only need to create one account with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Starting with the FREE Profile Page is the best practice, as you can transition it later to the Certification account needed for your circumstances. There is a checklist available on the website to help you make sure you have all required information ready to enter and a list of Frequently Asked Questions to learn more about becoming a NCAA student-athlete. If you are enrolled in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program, you may receive a fee waiver to register for free. You can reach the Eligibility Center at 1-877-262-1492 or view the guidelines at www.eligibilitycenter.org.
There are many websites for potential college athletes but be wary of spending money for services. You need to check these resources very carefully and obtain references. Listening to the advice of your coaches is important. Take a look at the websites below:
www.athleticscholarships.net www.collegesportsscholarships.com
If you’re an athlete, the best advice we can give you is to keep up your grades. Gone are the days when athletic ability alone will get you accepted.
You must know your Core Course GPA. Keep track of your courses and the units that apply towards eligibility. Use the www.CoreCourseGPA.com program paid for by Charles County Public Schools to monitor your progress towards eligibility. Speak to your high school Coach, Athletic Director, or Counselor for further information.
How to ACTIVATE your FREE Membership:
Step 1: Go to www.CoreCourseGPA.com
Step 2: In the “New Member Account Creation” box, enter:
SCHOOL ID: 210685
REMINDER…. ***Juniors and seniors need to send your ACT and/or SAT scores directly from the testing agencies using the CODE “9999” to have your official scores considered for NCAA eligibility.
NCAA APPROVED COURSES
For a complete list of NCAA Approved courses at your high school, visit the NCAA Eligibility Center website at www.eligibilitycenter.org, create an account, navigate to the “Resources” tab, click “U.S. Students”, and then “List of NCAA Courses.” Follow the prompts to search for your high school’s list by name. Work closely with your high school counselor, athletic director, and coach to make sure you know how to go!!!

Here are some suggestions on how to prep for the tests:
✓ Internet resources (there are many FREE resources available including sample tests, practice questions, etc., Khan Academy)
✓ Books and Software (school and public libraries, amazon.com or other on-line bookstores – search for SAT Prep, Act Prep or Test Prep)
✓ Online Courses (Some are available on the ACT and SAT websites)
✓ Private Tutors
Should I Take the ACT or SAT???
SAT vs ACT: which test is a better fit for your student? ALL U.S. colleges and universities accept scores from BOTH the ACT or SAT; there is no advantage in taking one test over the other. Though not identical, each test measures students’ proficiency in various critical skill areas, such as problem solving and reading comprehension, which are necessary for college success. Some students find that the ACT caters to their strengths more so than the SAT, and vice versa. Need a quick side-by-side comparison of the tests? (Information from www.studypoint.com)
Use your PSAT Scores to help you PREPARE for the SAT
Students who took the PSAT in October can access their PSAT Score Reports on the College Board website. If you have an account with College Board, you can sign in with your Username and Password; if you don’t have an account, you will need to create a Student Account at https://studentscores.collegeboard.org/home.
Once you receive your PSAT Score Report, you can learn more about what your scores mean by visiting https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/scores/understanding-scores. Using your score report, you will learn how ready you are for college, explore which AP courses are a good match for you, and get insight into which skills to focus on in order to prepare for the SAT. You can also link your College Board and Khan Academy accounts to access FREE, personalized SAT practice based on your PSAT/NMSQT results, go to: https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/practice-preparation.
