MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
This week has been such a great way to close out 2020! Our annual Kindness Week was a huge success due to the creativity of our staff and students and your partnership and participation as parents and families. Thank you to all families who participated in our weekly activities by visiting our Winter Windows display, joining in for Tuesday’s singalong, decorating rocks for our Kindness Rock Garden and lightbulbs for your window at home, and sending in photos to highlight what you did this week. Your participation has been amazing and really made this Kindness Week meaningful to our students! For a recap of Kindness Week, please watch this video that Mrs. Conway put together using all of the many photos that were submitted throughout the week!
Coming up in January, all students in 2nd-8th grade across the district will be taking the MAP assessment (Measures of Academic Progress). We last took this assessment last year in January (except for our current 2nd graders). This assessment measures overall progress in both math and reading, and will give parents a good snapshot of how students have progressed over the course of the year. MAP testing will take place on Tuesday, January 5th and Wednesday, January 6th. Your child’s teacher will let students know the time of these tests at each grade level. In addition, students will take a reading fluency assessment along with a short math assessment that measures their current math progress compared to when they started this fall. These assessments are all used to help us best know how to deliver instruction for our students, so it is important that you do not assist them while they are working. It is natural for parents to want to provide their child with support when they ask questions, but for the sake of the validity and usefulness of these assessments, we appreciate you letting each student show us what they know independently. Thanks for your help!
As we head into winter break, the Mount Prospect Public Library is hosting it’s winter reading program to keep students engaged in reading. Please see this link for more information. In addition, Amy Peters, our school psychologist, wrote this helpful blog post about parenting during the pandemic to help us as parents as we continue to support our children through this atypical time that I think you will find helpful. As always, please know that we are here to help you with any struggles you may be facing. It is always our desire that Fairview families feel cared for and supported, and that is especially true during this challenging time. While we have certainly faced challenges this year, there is also much to be grateful for at Fairview as we look forward to 2021. Due to the amazing technology we have at our fingertips, the creativity and dedication of our staff, the ongoing support of parents, and the resiliency of our students, we’ve made gains with our students this year and made the most of the situation we find ourselves in. I know I’ve said this before, but it still rings true. Our character as a community shines through in how we respond to the challenges we face rather than letting difficulties dictate how we feel, and I’m so proud of how we’ve responded throughout this pandemic. I remain hopeful that we will see more of our students in person soon and ultimately return to our normal operations before too long. I wish all of you a wonderful winter break!
Happy Holidays!

DONATE TO DISTRICT 57 FAMILIES IN NEED
COVID-19 has presented many unique hardships and challenges for some of our family members, friends and neighbors. Some parents have asked if it’s possible to make a financial donation to help support District 57 families who are currently in need. The District has set up a system to facilitate this for anyone who is interested. We will distribute the collected funds to families, based on formal requests that are made. If you would like to donate, simply go to this link and follow these steps:
- Click on “Make a one-time payment.”
- Fill in your student’s name, school and grade.
- Click “COVID-19 Donation to District 57 Families.”
- Fill in your information and donation amount, then proceed to the payment section.
Thank you so much, in advance, for your kindness and generosity.
Those who are in need of support can fill out this online form. Names will only be seen by select district personnel who are distributing the funds.
Thank you,
Adam Parisi, Ed.S.
