Activity Works Grant: Part of Let's Move Active Schools
Eligibility: Schools serving K-4 students
Activity Works’ cloud-based platform delivers scientifically-designed activity breaks to the classroom via exciting, cross-curricular video episodes. Each episode enhances core curriculum content and stimulates metabolism through multi-sensory, aerobic exercise.
Schools awarded an Activity Works grant will receive: a site license for one calendar year; 40+ video episodes; lesson plans in core subject and Physical Education for each episode; theme pages for each episode with fun facts and interactive episode quizzes; individual classroom dashboard reporting sessions, and more.
And, the best part is that applying only takes a few minutes!

Strive for a Safer Drive (S4SD) Initiative
Eligibilty: Michigan High School
Deadline: November 18, 2016
Ford Driving Skills for Life (Ford DSFL) and the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) are offering 50 Michigan high schools the opportunity to participate in Strive for a Safer Drive (S4SD). S4SD is a safe driving initiative aimed at reducing serious traffic crashes involving teen drivers, the leading cause of death among teens nationwide. The application process is quick and easy.
Schools selected will receive $1,000 to develop and implement a student-led, peer-to-peer traffic safety awareness campaign. Resources and guidance will be provided to help schools create a successful campaign. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 5 schools.
S4SD is a great opportunity for school leaders to teach teens about safe driving through peer-to-peer teaching. Student groups and advisors from audio-visual classes, auto shop classes, health classes, leadership development committees, marketing classes, national honor societies, Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D.), Students Leading Students (SLS), student councils and youth advisory councils have participated in the past. Any teacher, coach, parent, youth mentor or school administrator can advise a team of students.

New Resources
This webinar will highlight the mobile apps SAMHSA has developed to provide a spectrum of mental health support: KnowBullying and Suicide Safe. It will also provide an overview of the risk and impact of bullying and suicide in school-aged children, highlight the connection between these public health issues and the “whole child” concept, and other key resources can help school staff promote bullying prevention and suicide prevention in schools.
Preventing Teen Pregnancy: A special issue of the American Journal of Public Health
The American Journal of Public Health has just released a special supplement focused on findings from the federal Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, a grant program for evidence-based and promising teen pregnancy prevention (TPP) programs operated by the HHS Office of Adolescent Health. The supplement provides results of evaluations of the first cohort of TPP grantees. Decision-makers can use this to inform choices about programs and strategies for their communities.
Department of Justice Launches Changing Minds Campaign To Raise Awareness about Children’s Exposure to Violence
On October 19, 2016, the Department of Justice announced the launch of “Changing Minds,” the first national campaign to raise awareness, teach skills, and inspire public action to address children’s exposure to violence and trauma. Established through the Department’s Defending Childhood Initiative, the national education campaign features digital and print content intended to reach adults who interact with children and youth in grades K-12. The multiyear campaign will engage teachers, coaches, counselors, doctors, nurses, law enforcement officers, and other professionals and caregivers on proven ways to help heal the damage of childhood trauma.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training
One-day class teaches professionals, community how to help youth with mental illness.
Oakland Schools, with support from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) and Advancing Wellness and Resilience in Education State Educational Agency (AWARE-SEA) will offer free mental health first aid training to those who wish to better understand how to handle a situation in which they may be required to help a youth who experiences mental health challenges.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is an eight-hour certification course designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers and other citizens how to support adolescents ages 12-18 who might be experiencing a mental health challenge.

The Mental Health First Aid course will teach participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, AD/HD, disruptive behavior disorders, and substance use disorder.
Using role-playing and simulations, participants will learn to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care. Participants will not learn to diagnose, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling – rather, participants will learn how to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness, or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan:
- Assess for risk of suicide or harm
- Listen non-judgmentally
- Give reassurance and information
- Encourage appropriate professional help
- Encourage self-help and other support strategies

This training can also be brought in-district at no cost.
Participants will be asked to take a brief survey via email. No identifying information will be collected. Attendees are asked to dress comfortably, as the training is interactive. A lunch break will be included, however lunch is not provided. Participants are welcome to bring food and drinks.

The Michigan Model for Health is an evidence-based sequential K-12 curriculum that addresses essential health skills and covers:
- Social and Emotional Skills
- Nutrition and Physical Activity
- Safety
- Alcohol
- Tobacco and Other Drugs
- Personal Health and Wellness
The curriculum is aligned with the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations for Health (GLCEs), Michigan Merit guidelines for Health Education, and the National Health Education Standards. And is rich with opportunities to address Michigan State Standards in ELA and support development of College and Career Ready Student Characteristics.
The Michigan Model for Health Curriculum is recognized by Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) and the National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices.
The evaluation of MMH shows those students who receive this curriculum have stronger communication skills, better skills in managing their feelings and actions, improved attitudes about taking actions to stay safe, and stronger drug and tobacco refusal skills (Source: Two Year, Two State Evaluation Study).
Participants will leave their grade level course prepared to teach these skill-based lessons, which will lead to meaningful behavior changes in the classroom and beyond. For mental health professionals interested in supporting this Tier 1 curriculum, there is an afternoon breakout session provided to discuss ways to collaborate with teachers, creative effective Tier II interventions, and use for special education assessment and/or intervention.

2016-2017 HIV Certification for Grades 4-12
Cost: $25 All Day; $15 half day HIV Update only

This training is for teachers of grades 4-12 who are responsible for instruction of students reproductive health, sexuality education and HIV/AIDS education. The training fulfills the mandated HIV Certification. State law mandates that every public school district provides HIV prevention education at every building level (elementary, middle and high school).
This compressed training provides participants with the law, overview of HIV prevention,
transmission and treatment, effective curriculum for HIV and Sex Ed, the role of the Sex Ed Advisory Boards and answering students’ sensitive questions. Participants will understand the law as it pertains to Sex Ed and HIV Prevention in the school setting, comprehend basic HIV facts, understand what makes an effective curriculum and feel comfortable talking about this topic with students.
To gain maximum benefit from this course, teachers should know what sex education curricula and/or HIV/AIDS curriculum has been approved by their local School Board.

2016-2017 Health Servies Trainings
This course will teach adult and child one-rescuer CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction to non-medical responders. This course will also review the warning signs of heart attack, sudden cardiac arrest and stroke. The automatic external defibrillator (AED) will be introduced and a discussion regarding the chain of survival. Skills demonstration required for course certification. It includes: emergency response, management of basic injuries such as bleeding and care of burns. Medical emergencies such as diabetes, stroke and heart attack will be addressed.

Distributing Medications in Schools
This two day workshop is designed specifically for school personnel responsible for medication administration. It addresses: distribution concerns, legal parameters of medication administration, storage and access, record keeping procedures and conditions, and first aid (application of dressings, ointments etc.). Day two provides information to meet level 1 and level 2 diabetes training for school staff.

Epi-Pen Trainings
This two-hour workshop will satisfy Bill No. 4353 Sec. 1179a. (1) Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, a school board shall ensure that, in each school it operates with an instructional and administrative staff of at least 10, there are at least 2 employees at the school who have been trained in the appropriate use and administration of an epinephrine auto-injector and that, in each school it operates with an instructional and administrative staff of fewer than 10, there is at least 1 employee at the school who has been trained in the appropriate use and administration of an epinephrine auto-injector. The training required under this subsection will be conducted under the supervision of, and shall include evaluation by, a licensed registered professional nurse.
