School Counselor's Corner
Parents,
We are focusing on different Character Traits that make a person a good citizen. This week our focus was on one of the key core components of our Horseshoe Honor Code and that was the Character Trait of Respect.
When students are being a respectful person:
-
They follow the Golden Rule; Treat others the way they want to be treated
-
They are tolerant and accepting of differences; which means they don’t make fun of people for being different from them
-
They use good manners, and say positive things
-
They show empathy and are considerate of the feelings of others
-
They never resort to threats or violence
AND
They try to work out their conflicts and disagreements with others peacefully by thinking Win-Win, where they try to make both parties happy, and not just try to get their way!
Thinking Win-Win is a Seven Habits philosophy that I have talked to students about in the past. Try to have a discussion with your student about possible situations of conflict, maybe even ones they have had in the past, and try to help them think about ways that they could have solved it by thinking Win-Win. If situations arises where both parties can’t figure out a way to make it a positive for both. Then help your student realize that it is ok at that time to do something such as “Rock-Paper-Scissors” or flip a coin, and have the winner be in charge of the decision that day but with the understanding that they person who loses gets the opportunity to make the decision the next time. It is very important for students to feel empowered and to understand that at all times they control their perceptions and actions in regards to a situation, and if they always choose respectful ways to deal with conflict, they will never have problems with making or keeping friends.
Until next week……..
