November 7-11 Newsletter
With an approaching tropical storm and Veteran's Day, we had a short week in school but still wanted to highlight some of the awesome things that happened around campus!
Tuesday was Election Day throughout the nation, but also right here at York! Our students participated in a mock election and had some lessons on the morning show from our 7th grade Civics students to explain some of the roles they voted on such as what a governor and senator do. It was fun to see our students proudly displaying their "I Voted!" stickers from the Hillsborough County Election Board, knowing that their vote counts!
Wednesday, our students participated in our Salute to Veteran's Assembly. The middle school band made their debut and sounded amazing! Our elementary students honored Veteran's with two songs in the program, as well as with beautiful poppy flowers made in art class. We had some of middle school student speakers explain what the different branches of the military do, and a reading of a Veteran's Day poem. Our middle school art students made some gorgeous banners that will be sent to the Baldomero Lopez State Veteran's Nursing Home along with the donations from our Operation Patriot project. Our admirals also donated their artwork and posters to the home to be displayed throughout the facility. Every time they see the posters, they will think of our Admirals!
Our students have been participating in a Long Term Investigation observing differences of how carved and uncarved pumpkins change over long periods of time. We used this as an opportunity in several subjects to introduce vocabulary words like "rot" and "decay" and descriptive words like "slimy" and "oozing."
To our presenters who are scheduled for the Teach-In, we THANK YOU for volunteering and will be sending information home with your student on Monday with specifics for parking/arrival.
With the holidays and "season of giving" approaching, we've had families reach out asking for ways to support the campus. Please see the note below from Mrs. Zollars as well as the "How Can You Help?" section at the bottom of this newsletter.
Next week we look forward to Math Bowl, The Great American Teach-In, Spirit Week and other special events prior to fall break.

Admiral on Deck: Mrs. Throckmorton
Hi Admirals, I'm Mrs. Throckmorton - a 3rd grade ELA teacher! I am so excited to be at York! I graduated from USF with a degree in Elementary Education. This will be my 15th year teaching. I have taught 4th, 2nd, and 3rd grade. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family-boating, fishing, reading a good book, and going shopping. My husband and I have 2 little girls- Mikayla who is 9 and Lexi who is 4. Both my girls go to York, too! I also have a dog named Sadie who is almost 3 years old. I'm looking forward to a great year ahead and making our school an amazing place to be!
