What We Did Last Week
In Math last week we continued to practice adding and subtracting fractions and decimals. Students really had to focus on what the problems were asking them because the problems that they are faced with are now becoming multi-steps problems, so to help them become masters of problem solving, I am asking them to do a lot of drawing and modeling.
In Science we investigated our own mastery of the Unit 1 Test then moved into our next unit...Matter. Matter is by far one of my FAVORITE units! We have some awesome labs planned for this unit. We investigated Phases of Matter and began investigating density. Students did a great job with a simulation lab on the computer to discover some elements of density on Friday.
What We are Doing This Week
In Math we further our knowledge and application of fractions by multiplying and dividing them. We will do several investigations to make it more meaningful and to develop a real-world connection.
In Science we will continue our observations of density on Monday. Then we move into investigating with Conductors and Insulators of Thermal Energy and of Electrical Energy. I've got some really fun stuff planned!
Homework
For Math students will need to watch a video on Monday over Multiplying Fractions and also on Thursday on Dividing Fractions. They will need to complete DMH Week 9 on Tuesday and Wednesday.
For Science students will need to complete Week 9, 5 problems per day.
Event Information
Read Across the Globe
Students will participate in a global Guinness World Record event for the most students being read to at a time. 4th and 5th grade students will participate. Guest readers will be district personnel from ISC and from HMS, including electives teachers and admin! We (teachers) will be monitoring and taking videos/pictures. Student faces will not be included in the video or pictures. They will all need to make sure that they are on-task and constantly facing the reader or else they will not be counted. Students must also remain in the classroom for the 30-minute duration. If students leave the room for ANY reason, they will not be allowed to return and will not be counted. We will make sure that they get a restroom break before and after the event. We are SUPER excited to be taking part in this!

Neon Circus
I can't wait for our special fundraising event on Friday! Every year gets better and better with celebrating our family bond that we have developed at HES while raising money to improve special events, programs, and equipment for our AMAZING school. I hear that this year is going to be the best yet. I'm personally very intrigued to learn more! I will be working at the Neon Circus from 6:30-7:30. I'm not sure what or where I will be working but know it will be a lot of fun no matter what! I hope you and your family will be able to come out and join the fun! Get ready for #ACrazyGoodTime!
