Fulton Focus
For the parents and patrons of the Fulton School District
September 22, 2016
A message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Patrons,
In prior issues of the Focus, you have been notified of our efforts and compliance with revised state laws regarding bullying and hazing. A challenge that we have noted in student behavior is Friday Night football. The past few years, we have attempted more flexibility with non-high school students attending the game. However, that flexibility also came with younger children being injured from running and horseplay on the grounds and in the stands; and adults being hit with a variety of flying objects. And, we note that some disrespectful behavior in weekday building/classroom behavior can be traced to horseplay at athletic events and non-school events.
Consequently, we are forced to re-implement a few prior rules at Friday Night football: all middle school students are required to sit in the middle school section during the game; elementary age children will only be admitted with a responsible adult and be supervised by that adult; and any child misbehaving will be asked to leave the area and not readmitted.
Even though a relaxed and more flexible approach is preferred, the District must have rules to ensure spectator safety and prevent disrespectful, inappropriate behavior during school hours.
Your support and assistance is greatly appreciated. I do hope you are able to enjoy all Fulton School District activities.
Thank you for sending great kids for us to work with.
Sincerely,
Jacque A. Cowherd, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Educational Technology by Josh Howard
Success in the 21st century requires knowing how to learn. Students in Fulton Public Schools today will likely have several careers in their lifetime. They must develop strong critical thinking and interpersonal communication skills in order to be successful in an increasingly fluid, interconnected, and complex world. That’s why we emphasize technology in our teaching at Fulton Public Schools. Technology allows for 24/7 access to information, constant social interaction, and easily created and shared digital content. With access to the right tools, our teachers can leverage technology to create an engaging and personalized environment to meet the emerging educational needs of all our students. No longer does learning have to be one-size-fits-all or confined to the classroom.
To give an example, many digital tools allow for scaling learning environments. Depending on the skill level of students, our technology can allow them to access material at a level that is appropriate to them. Digital tools also allow students to pursue things they are more passionate about in their learning. Say a student wants to learn to code or to edit video -- our tech tools allow them the freedom to integrate those passions into their learning. And with the aforementioned 24/7 access, our students are free to research and publish their own works to a global audience. Many of our students already keep blogs, publish poetry, or showcase their JavaScript creations on the web. Fulton Public Schools investment in technology allows for authentic learning experiences for all of our students.
In our schools, we aim to re-imagine 21st-century education focusing on preparing students to be learners for life. We give them the tools to define their own learning experience. We engage our students to be stakeholders in the process of their learning and we allow them to shape what their future will look like.
Mr. Josh Howard is the Instructional Technology Coach for Fulton Public Schools. He is coaching teachers to integrate technology into their lessons that is engaging and include high level thinking skills.
