UPad & UPad Lite

Platform: iPad

Price: Free or $4.99 for Pro

UPad is my favorite writing app. It does almost everything you would want in a writing app. Using UPad you can write on digital paper, annotate on PDFs (including highlighting, underlining, post-it notes and reference images), type, and insert images and shapes. The only thing it's missing is audio recording, but don't worry. We'll have one of those apps later in the semester.

Each Notebook you create can contain multiple pages and are easy to organize. For writing, UPad has a "zoom" tool that allows you to write in a more normal and comfortable manner. It comes with unlimited pen colors and multiple pen widths. You can also export as an image or PDF to a number of different apps (Dropbox, Evernote, Drive). In addition, if you export to Evernote as an image, Evernote can search your handwritten text.

  • handwritten notes
  • annotating articles
  • grading papers
  • drawing
  • completing and signing forms and emailing them directly from the app

These are just a few ideas. I'm sure you can come up with even more.

Final Thoughts

I love this app. I use it everyday. The difference between the paid and free is that in the free you can only create 5 notebooks whereas the paid version can have unlimited. Because it's free there's no reason not to try it out. I really have no cons for this app.
