We are now at the halfway point of PARCC testing. Two more weeks to go. After going through this process for the first time, of course there were a few minor issues but all in all, it is going very well. I've spoken to a number of students that actually enjoyed taking the PARCC test over the NJASK and thought that it was easy. Imagine that. After two weeks of testing here are some observations:

Hallway Volume

The volume in the hallways has been very good. Thank you for using the Quiet Please signs. It is very important that teachers walk their students to and from Related arts, Lunch and Gym/Health classes and not leave them unattended. Students are moving through the hallways unattended through testing areas.

Read, Read, Read

We are very limited the tech support department. As we are troubleshooting some of the PARCC issues, we are noticing that many of them could have been handled if the manual was read ahead of time or if the cheat sheet provided was used. Please read the information provided to you. It's there to make your life a lot easier.

Please check the PARCC schedule as your testing window opens. As you observed this week, everyone will be on an alternate schedule. Related Arts, PE/Health, lunch periods, and preps have also changed. The schedule was shared via Google Docs. We have many students that have been cross-teamed. M. Vastardis emailed those teachers with students that are on multiple teams the schedules for those students. If there are any issues with the schedules let her know.

Students Not Taking the PARCC

Please continue to check the PARCC Refusal List as your testing window approaches. We want to avoid situations in which a student takes the test after their parents sent in a letter of refusal.

School Stuff

New Field Trip Procedure

As field trip season approaches, make sure that you refer to the handbook (pg. 18) for all field trip procedures. I have added a new procedure that does not appear in the staff handbook. Field trips submitted through EasyTrip will not be approved until confirmation is received from the nurses office that the roster of students attending the trip has been reviewed by the Health Office. Also, please check with M. DiMartino to make sure that the date you selected for your trip does not conflict with another event.

Parent Conferences

I sent a text earlier this week to parents informing them that night conferences will not be rescheduled. I explained that they should make arrangements with their child's teacher to come up with an agreed upon time if they would like to reschedule.

Student Opportunities

Temple University is hosting the 2015 ExxonMobil Bernard Summer Science Camp (EMBHSSC) this summer. EMBHSSC is organized to provide activities, experiments, projects, and field experiences for students entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the fall of 2015. The EMBHSSC is a two-week, academic, residential camp that emphasizes increasing students’ mathematics and science knowledge and skills while introducing them to college life and stimulating their interest in science and engineering as a potential career path. Learn more about the camp opportunity here.

Classroom Phones

From time to time clubs are cancelled and students need to make arrangements with their parents to be picked up. Students must be allowed to use the classroom telephone. We don't have the capacity to allow students to use the phones in the main office.

3/19 Inservice

The Thursday in-service topic will be Unpacking the Standards to continue the district's focus on understanding the Common Core Standards. It will be facilitated by Chris Newman and Lori Cooney. We will meet in the music room at 1:00pm. Please bring your computers.

Extended Day Care

You might have noticed that we are announcing extended day care students to come down to daycare earlier (2:27pm). We had a situation last week that has required the main office to do so. Please make it clear to students that they need to quickly pack their things and get to daycare by 2:35. We can't call first wave until we know that all the students that belong in daycare have reported.
