New Teacher MSDE Course

MSDE Credit Course

The mentors have now facilitated 7 learning opportunities around the FFT. Thanks to everyone who has been a part of these collaborative sessions. We hope that you have learned and implemented new knowledge to improve teaching practices and student learning . We have an additional 5 learning opportunities scheduled from January - May. Reminder: you must attend at least 10 sessions in order to receive MSDE credit.

Video Recording

Have you been recorded? I know that many of you are thinking that there is no way that you want to be recorded on your best day or your worst day. However, research indicates that in order to grow, one must be able to identify what works well and adjust one's practice for better performance. Every college and professional athlete or musician has been recorded in order to improve his/her performance and we believe that in order for us to become better teachers, we must examine our practices and make changes as needed. The recording does not need to last longer than 5-10 minutes. Choose a time period or practice that you want to examine with a mentor or lead teacher.

Video recording and reflective conversations about teaching practices must occur both semesters in order to receive credit.

Classroom Visits

Have you visited another teacher and what have you learned? Seeing quality practices from another teacher is great way to stretch your learning and discuss quality student engagement, learning and assessment. All visits must be complete by March 31, 2016.

Mentoring and Lead Teacher Support

Ongoing support for new teachers is critical to the well-being and retention of new teachers. We hope that you enjoy teaching in WCPS and realize how much we appreciate the hard-work and ongoing effort that you put forth everyday. Mentors and lead teachers should be available to answer questions, troubleshoot problems and reflect about teaching. Please ask a mentor or lead teacher if you need or want additional help or have any questions. Our job is to help you become the teacher you want to be.

We will be conducting a survey about the support that has been offered to all new teachers in order to evaluate our New Teacher Induction Program and the improvements that need to be made. In addition to the survey, I would also like to create a focus group of new teachers who would be willing to discuss the strengths and challenges of the program. If you would like to participate, please email me at or call at (301)-766-8765.
