Baby It's Cold Outside!

Another reminder to all parents of the need to have your child properly equipped for the winter weather. Whenever possible we are looking to get our students outdoors for recess, as research shows that there is great cognitive, social, emotional, and physical benefit over the long-term; not to mention that the active time outside gets their brains better wired to learn during the day. This being said, we use 12- 15 degrees (feels like temperature) as our general guidelines for whether or not to keep the kids inside. Do be aware however, that the preference (for the benefit of the kids) is to get them outside and moving.

Please do your part and be sure that your child have proper jackets, snow pants, boots, hats, and gloves so they can be best prepared during the winter weather.

2014-15 M-Step Reports

Reports for grades 3rd-5th will be mailed home to parents this week. The reports will have the scores from the test students took last year. The test gives us baseline data that we will look at with our other data as we continue to look for the ways to best support our students in their learning.

OK2SAY Seminar for Parents

The Michigan Attorney General’s office will conduct a presentation on student safety featuring the Michigan Cyber Safety Initiative (CSI) and the student safety hotline, OK2SAY.

The one-hour seminar for adults is being offered at the Northwood Elementary School Cafeteria at 6:30 PM on January 7. Entry will be at the North Entrance #1.

The community seminar provides practical tools including Internet safety tips and how to: 1) access the Michigan Sex Offender Registry; 2) understand the impact of digital footprints; 3) appreciate the risk of sharing photos with embedded location information; 4) recognize the potential dangers and legal ramification of sexting; and 5) identify cyberbullying warning signs and develop a plan of action. This presentation will also cover what the students see in their respective presentations, as well as what OK2SAY is, and how it works.

Handouts used during our presentations, and additional information, can be accessed at the Attorney General's website, www.mi.gov/csi. More information on OK2SAY, as well as resources, is available at www.mi.gov/ok2say.
