Austin ISD Social Studies Weekly
Freedom Matters! supplemental curriculum
These inclusive, teacher-led lesson plans combine the personal stories of dissidents and democracy advocates featured in the Freedom Collection with broader, universal concepts of freedom, rule of law, limited representative government, and the protection of individual political, economic, and personal rights. The lesson plans correspond to the TEKS that students are exploring in the classroom.
Texas Folklife Stories Summer Institute
Texas Folklife is now seeking teachers, administrators, and high school students for the Stories Summer Institute, our annual summer workshop for folklore documentary production.
From July 18-22, participants in the Summer Institute will work with professional audio producers and folklorists to document Austin's community traditions and cultural heritage. They will record narration at the state-of-the-art KUT studio, Austin's local NPR affiliate. The stories they produce will be presented to the public on the last day of the workshop and then uploaded to Public Radio Exchange, where they are often selected for broadcast by public radio stations worldwide.
No production or folklore experience is necessary. The Institute is free for AISD teachers, but space is limited.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please send these materials and contact Program Director Brian Griffith at firstname.lastname@example.org.
