Cougar Connection
March 2015 - Kitley Elementary
PRINCIPAL'S LETTER
Greetings to our Kitley Family,
February and March have been very busy here at Kitley. I am so excited to share all of the events and activities that we have hosted. We held our Friendship parties on February 13th. Thank you to all of the room parents who organized this special occasion. A Step to Success night was held on February 19th for parents of 3rd-5th graders. We had a great response with more than fifty in attendance. Our instructional coaches, Mrs. Lumbley and Mrs. Lambert presented tips and strategies to parents to help prepare our students for ISTEP+ and IREAD3.
Our PTC hosted our first annual Girls Night Out Movie Night on February 20th. What a great night! The Cougar Den Café was packed full of moms, daughters, sisters, and grandmothers as they watched the movie, FROZEN. We learned quickly that need more parent volunteers for evenings such as this! Thank you to those who volunteered and to the PTC for their time, dedication, and hard work.
Our music teachers, Mr. Fellerman and Mrs. Stevenson presented our 1st grade Music Sharing Night on February 26th. Parents and students visited stations to participate in songs, dances, and play percussion instruments. Once again, the gym was full of activity and fun. It is wonderful to see our parents here sharing valuable time with their kiddos. Lastly, Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Chatham led the charge to raise $17,000 for Jump Rope for Heart!! What a wonderful cause to support!
Part I of ISTEP+ Applied Skills was completed last week and we are looking ahead to the 3rd grade IREAD assessment from March 15-17. If your student is a 3rd grade student, please ensure that they are in attendance during these three days. It is a small testing window of 3 days and all 3rd readers in Indiana are required to take this assessment.
We are also excited about our Folk Dance Club that meets on Friday Mornings, Our monthly ALL PRO Dad Breakfasts, and our new Girls on the Run Club for 4th and 5th grade girls! We will also be holding a Boys Night Out on Friday, April 17th from 6:00-9:00 PM. WE NEED AS MANY PARENT VOLUNTEERS AS WE GET FOR THIS EVENT! Please remember to have a background check in place if you are interested in volunteering. Information for background checks can be found on our website.
You can find us on Facebook and our school website. We are also excited to announce that our Related Team has created a new info page. Also, watch for our Principal blogs each month to find out the next new topic, event, or exciting news. Again, there is no better place to than Kitley Elementary! Always remember that Kitley Cougars ROAR!! We are Respectful, Organized, Aiming High, and Responsible! Have a super and safe spring break!
Always learning,
Mrs. Schoene
THANK YOU PARENTS AND PTC! WE DID IT!
Through different fundraising efforts of the music department and students, we were able to raise over half of the funds needed!!
Through the generous support of the PTC, we are now able to purchase all of the risers we need to ensure the safety of our students during our future music programs and school events. The PTC donated over $4,000 to the cause!
These new risers will be unveiled at the 3rd grade music program on April 23rd.
Thank you to all of our students, parents, and staff for your support!
COACH'S CORNER
Everyday Mathematics at Home:
Practice telling time by helping your child set a clock or watch. Some times for your child to try might be 1:05, 3:15, 4:30, 5:45, 6:00, 7:10 and so on. Say a 3-or 4-digit number and have your child identify the actual value of the digit in each place. For example, if the number is 3,587, the value of the 3 is 3000; the value of the 5 is 500; and so on.
Reading at Home:
When reading with your child at home mix it up a bit. Try reading every other sentence, paragraph, or page. You read one sentence, paragraph or page and then your child reads the next one. You might try to choral read a page together and then silently practice the next page before reading it aloud. Remember, it’s not a race. We want students to read at the speed they talk. Make reading together fun and enjoyable.

Notice of Immunization Requirements for 6th Graders (03/15)
Parents of current 5th graders:
Students need additional immunizations when they enter 6th grade. The IN State Dept. of Health’s required shots are Tdap and MCV4 for all 6th grade students. The requirement is based on grade level, not age; students who is 10 years old and up may receive the shots.
Please contact your student’s doctor as soon as possible to schedule an appointment before school begins in July 2015. Doctor’ offices may have limited appointments if you wait to call. The exclusion date for students without the shots is September 22, 2015. Written proof of appointment must be on file for the student to continue to attend beyond Sept. 22. Please send your elementary school nurse a copy of the updated shots if your student has already received the required shots. Send the middle school nurse the records if appointments are over the summer.
If you have questions you may call Peg Stanish RN, Supervisor of Health Services, at 862-2411 or Heather Anderson RN, Jenny Kiger RN, or Sandie Hickey LPN at Kitley at 803—5977. Thank you so much.
In addition to your private providers, the Marion Co. Health Dept. has many appointment times and walk-in clinics. Call (317)221-5700 for more information. The Jane Pauley Community Health Center at Hawthorne Elementary School (8301 E. Rawles Ave.) provides immunizations at affordable prices and accepts major insurance plans. Appointments are necessary—call (317)532-3999 for more details.
