Wiley Weekly 2/12

Mrs. Wiley's Crew

Dear UMAC Parents,

We had such a wonderful week celebrating our 100th day of school on Tuesday and Valentine’s Day today! It is so much fun to take a small step back from learning and have a little fun with our students!! A special thank you to Mrs. Martin for organizing our Valentine’s Party today and Mrs. Hougas and Ms. Deckro for volunteering to help. Also, the donations for our party were greatly appreciated, as were the hand sanitizer and Clorox Wipes! Let’s hope the “Honk Flu” is behind us all and we’re healthy the rest of the school year!

Enjoy the long weekend with your loved ones!

Field Trip: March 16

Our UMAC team has been invited to see the Disney's The Little Mermaid at Crystal Lake Central High School. Being such experts at performing, we're excited to watch this musical. We will be leaving promptly at 9:00 am on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 and return to school by 12:00 pm. The cost of this show is $3.00 per student. We will be sending the permission slip home next week.

Friendship February Blogs

During the month of February, UMAC has decided to focus on the friendships within our team. Each week, our blog’s will be centered around friendships. Last week, each student randomly selected another student in the class and wrote a paragraph complimenting that student. It brought tears to my eyes to read the wonderful things the students had to say about each other.

Colonial Williamsburg

On Thursday, our team traveled to the different UMAC classrooms to learn about life as in colonial Williamsburg. The pictures below are of our team learning the slave song "Juba." Brandon and Josh volunteered to lead the call and response song! :)

Shared Reading: Henry's Freedom Box

This week in shared reading we read one of our favorite historical texts, Henry’s Freedom Box. This is a true story of Henry Brown and how he escaped to freedom on the Underground Railroad. Students did a fantastic job using their knowledge learned in social studies to make deeper connections with this story. Our focus skill this week was character analysis. As we analyzed Henry’s thoughts and actions throughout the story we some very insightful inferences about Henry and this time period.
