THE WARRIOR WEEKLY
DECEMBER 5TH, 2016
THE STAFF SPOTLIGHT
FAITH, FAMILY, FRIENDSHIP
Warrior JV player, Nathan Russell, was involved in one of the scariest and horrific looking incidents many have witnessed in athletics. In attempting to take a charge, Nathan was in the process of falling to the ground when one of his teammates came down on him, compressing his head into the floor. It was a very traumatic and extremely rare accident, which was stunning for those who witnessed it firsthand. The impact caused immediate trauma to Nathan's head, which was followed by a substantial seizure. Nathan received immediate attention from trainer, Tony Cox, Dr. Bill Sutton, and medic Cory Lockridge, whom, were all in attendance at the game. Nathan was transported to IU Ball Memorial hospital where he stayed overnight for testing and monitoring.
What transpired after the initial injury occurred, left many in the gym speechless and gave hope for those who have questioned our young generation. The Wes-Del cheerleaders, students, players and coaches joined hands with the Madison Grant cheerleaders, students, players and coaches to form a prayer circle which stretched the length of the gym floor. As the EMT's arrived, our gymnasium was silent as many in attendance continued to pray for Nathan.
Nathan spent Friday evening and all day Saturday in the hospital while he underwent rounds of testing and an MRI. Late Saturday afternoon, prayers were answered as Nathan took a positive turn and begin responding and acting as himself. The family also received great news from the MRI, and Nathan was released late Saturday night. Nathan will remain at home, and at the earliest would be able to return to school on the 12th. Nathan's father, Matt, has said that it was the immediate response of those in attendance, along with the continued prayer and support of the Wes-Del community that helped in Nathan's quick release and road to recovery.
There have been many positive social media posts since Friday evening about the incident and the actions of both the Wes-Del and Madison Grant students, cheerleaders, players, coaches, and communities. This was another example of how the Warrior community places faith, family, and friendship above all else. #WDpride
