March Updates
News to share....
Welcoming a new member to our New Haven Family- By now it's no secret that our Board of Education and Sheriff Helmig have worked out a plan to put an officer in every elementary in Boone County. We are not only very grateful, but extremely excited to have our very own Boone County sheriff on campus all day, every day.
Social and Emotional Learning- This is an EXTREMELY important and undervalued part of our children's development. We have several different programs that we implement all year long that are designed to address and develop S/E learning. For example, Mrs. Mason and Ms. Fortner, our school counselors, visit every class each month and guide students through a variety of conversations on topics like: friendship, bullying, anxiety, kindness, executive functioning strategies, etc. We also have small groups that they work with that focus on specific topics like: dealing with anxiety, navigating friendships, conflict resolution, etc. In addition to that we have small group "Lunch bunch" times where students work with each other and Mrs. Sammons, our behavior strategist, to address topics that they have identified as a struggle. I've included a good article from Edutopia that highlights some strategies parents can implement at home. Overall, our country is seeing more and more cases of elementary children suffering from anxiety and other S/E difficulties.
Technology Use- Protecting our children is important, but is a growing concern especially with technology. We are seeing a seriously growing number of students who are exposed to inappropriate content on their devices. There are a number of things we can do as parents, such as limiting screen time, setting boundaries, and applying restrictions so that our children are not exposed to adult material. Below is a 2 minute video of how to set restrictions on IOS type devices. This was discussed at the parent event we had in the Fall, and I've been asked to share this information again.
Grandparents as Parents- Attached is a resource for Grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. The website link below provides resources for advocacy and support groups, in addition to strategies and other resources.
Celebrating Great Things!
Regional Governor's Cup- Congratulations to New Haven's Academic and Future Problem Solving teams! Our FPS team placed 2nd in the team division, and the Academic Team as a whole took 3rd place of 14 teams. We are very proud of our kids!
Repeats to Remember!
International Festival: Saturday, March 24th at Mann elementary from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. This day will be a multicultural world showcase, highlighting all different heritages and world cultures represented in all of our Boone county Schools. Please see the attached flyer.
Kindergarten Registration- Yes! It is that time of year already. All incoming kindergartners must be 5 years old by August 1st, 2018 to enroll. We will have a registration evening on Monday, March 26th beginning at 4:30 to 7:00. PLEASE bring current immunization certificate, birth certificate (original), social security card, Proof of residency (utility bill or lease with name and address). We also request that you have your child accompany you so that we may meet them and have them participate in a brief screening.
18 - 19 Placements
We have amazing teachers at New Haven, who all have a variety of strengths. I feel very strongly about the high expectations of teaching and learning, and the expertise of our teachers. I also know, as a teacher, that we all have different strengths and qualities that contribute to the success of the team. All grade levels are expected to work as a team allowing for all students to have the same experiences. Each teacher brings to the table an unique teaching style guided with the same standards. We take all of this into consideration as we begin to plan for the following year. Creating class lists really is a complex process because we look at, and consider many different criteria. We look at male / female ratios, achievement, needs (academic, social, emotional, etc), in addition to several other things. It is not a random process, but we also understand that sometimes there are other factors that need to be considered. We do not accept requests for specific teachers. Do not feel like you have to submit a request, I just am sharing what our procedure is for those that have had questions. I would also like to share that as we grow so does the need to add teachers to our staff, and some staff ask to change grade levels. The teachers that are on a grade level in one year may be different the following based on our growing needs.
So what does this mean?
We need you to be an integral part of your child's success throughout the year. You are their first teacher, and see something's that we do not. We will be accepting placement requests from parents this year; however; the requests will follow specific guidelines that will allow us to make the best match for student success. Requests are not guarantees, nor will all requests be honored. Ultimately it will be about creating the best learning environment for everyone, while trying to match the qualities that best meet your child's needs.
Request letters must:
- Explain what specific academic or social needs your child has.
- What qualities / characteristics in a teacher would best meet the needs of your child?
- Address other concerns if applicable to placement. (ex: health, personality conflicts, etc.)
- Be turned in to Mrs. Goble no later than Friday, April 27th. (Can be written or by email) mary.goble@boone.kyschools.us
Please DO NOT ask for a specific teacher or to be placed with a group of friends- these requests will not be considered.
