Message from Dr. Frischkorn

Good Evening Mayfield!

Let me start by saying that I'm so incredibly proud to be the principal of Mayfield and here supporting the Manassas community. The return of our students for the 2021-2022 school year was terrific. Our staff did an outstanding job preparing and setting the foundation for a great school year. Our students reported to school on Thursday and were great examples of what it means to be an all-around great student here at Mayfield. Parents, you all did just a fantastic job working with your children and preparing them to return to the school building. Our Manassas City School Board went above and beyond to ensure that our staff and students have the needed materials to learn and stay healthy throughout the school year. Thank you to the city leaders who continually support and work with the schools to ensure that the children of Manassas get a world-class education! We are definitely fortunate to be working together.

As the saying goes, we are stronger together. You see the "Stronger Together" banners throughout our city, and our school division is just another great example of that saying.

Always Learning!

Dr. Donald Frischkorn

Arrival Procedures

Mayfield's doors open at 7:00 AM to let students into the building. We let students off busses at 7:00 AM as well. Our students can enter the building, pick up their breakfast and get to their homeroom class by 7:15 AM. We start announcements at 7:15 AM. Students that arrive after 7:15 AM are considered tardy. It is vital to the success of our students that they arrive at school safely and on time.

We have a couple of suggestions that will support our arrival process:

  1. Have your child ride the bus if possible. We have a terrific transportation department with the best bus drivers in Virginia. Our busses are consistent and guarantee that our students will arrive at school on time.
  2. If your child is a car rider in the morning, you can have had your child wait on the sidewalk in front of the school. We have several picnic tables in front of the school where students can sit and wait till the school doors open.
  3. We ask that you pull your call all the way up to the staff member at the end of the sidewalk to have as many students as possible exit their cars. Don't stop your car directly in front of the school if there is room for you to pull up further.

Dismissal Procedures

Dismissal is a very busy time at Mayfield Intermediate School. Our staff is capable of dismissing over 800 students in less than 10 and making sure that all our students return home safely! It's truly impressive to see how efficiently our staff works together with our students and parents to make the dismissal process as seamless as possible.

We ask for a couple of supports from our families in order to help our dismissal procedures even more:

  1. Let the school know of your dismissal plans for your child prior to 1:00 PM if they are going to be different than the typical dismissal procedures. We understand that emergencies happen, however, we can't be pulling students off of the busses on a daily basis when we are dismissing them.
  2. If you are child is a car rider, please line up in the front loop and be ready to pick your child up at 2:10 PM. As soon as you have your child in the car and safely buckled in, you can safely exit the front loop area.

School Safety

Keeping students safe while at school is our top priority. The first weeks of school are all about setting expectations, teaching routines, and practicing safety procedures that we will utilize in an emergency. Additionally, we have two super staff members responsible for supporting students' safety throughout the school year. Mrs. Dove, our school safety officer, has been at Mayfield Intermediate since the school opened in 2006. She knows our Manassas families, and she is always here to support our students. Officer Lawler, our school resource officer (SRO), is the perfect example of what a school resource officer should be. He is a great presence during the school day and works extremely hard at building positive relationships with our students and staff. He helps our students understand how the Manassas City Police Department is here to serve and support our community.

Safety procedures that we will practice this year include:

  • Fire Drills
  • Lockdown Drills
  • Bus Evacuation Drills
  • Tornado Drills
  • Earthquake Drills

Today, we held our first fire drill of the year, and it went extremely well. Our staff could lead our students out of the building safely in 2 minutes, 58 seconds. All students were accounted for and returned to their classrooms in less than 10 minutes. Again, I was just amazed at how well our students performed. It was another wonderful Mayfield moment that should make our community proud of our school. We hold weekly fire drills for the first 4 weeks of school. We will hold a lockdown drill in August.

Social Contracts

Establishing positive relationships and building high-performing teams is the key to any successful school. All our Mayfield Bobcats will be participating in the process of building a Social Contract with their classmates. A Social Contract is simply an agreement of behavior. The Social Contracts will serve as the foundation for a classroom's positive culture and climate. Students will be active participants in the Social Contract process, and they follow up with the contract throughout the school year.

The foundation for the Social Contract is built around four questions:

  1. How do you want to be treated by me (leader)?
  2. How do you want to be treated by each other?
  3. How do you think I (leader) want to be treated by you?
  4. How do we want to treat each other when there is conflict?
