It's great to connect with you again!

It's been a busy month here at Hay Lakes School! There has been lots of great learning happening at the school, and our students have been enjoying the continuation of the great weather! Our Junior and Senior Volleyball teams have been very busy with practices, games, and tournaments. Both Junior teams will be competing in Regionals this upcoming week, and we will be hosting the Junior High Girl's Regional tournament on Thursday, November 3rd. All this week, Mrs. Yurkosky has been hosting a Scholastic Book Fair, and we are so grateful to her and for everyone's support for this important event for our Learning Commons. We are looking forward to our Halloween activities next week, and planning has already begun for our Remembrance Day Service which will take place on November 8th at 10:30.

With the fall break fast approaching, teachers are also preparing for our report cards which will be coming out on November 18th. A reminder to parents that you can access the PowerSchool Parent Portal from our school website. If you want to use the app on your phone, you'll first have to log in from the browser on the school website. There are tutorials on how to do this, but please don't hesitate to connect with the office if you have any difficulties gaining access! We are planning for the return of milk cards, hot lunches, and ice cream cards. We are hoping to have some of these things up and running by the beginning of December, and we will be sending out more information once everything is finalized!

We always encourage parents to reach out to their child's teacher or the administration if they have anything they would like to discuss. Email addresses for all teachers can be found on our school website. We look forward to seeing everyone at our parent-teacher interviews on November 23rd.

2021-2022 Awards Night Celebration

On October 26th, we celebrated our 2021-2022 school awards recipients. We recognized students for their academic, athletic, and character achievements. We were happy to have BRSD Board of Trustees Chair, Mrs. Karen Belich, attend the ceremony and help us to honour our students who achieved academic honours.

A full list of awards recipients can be found here.

Halloween Activities

On Monday, October 31st, we will be hosting our Halloween Activities.

In the morning, students from all grades will be participating in pumpkin carving! Our Secondary students will be helping our students Gr. 1-6. Students in Gr. 1-6 are encouraged to bring a pumpkin to carve.

After lunch, students will be given time to change into their costumes. Parents are welcome to come and help students get dressed starting at 12:15 if needed. We will then be having our Costume Parade!

In the last two periods of the day, our Gr. 1-6 students will be having a dance in the gym!

School Council Meeting - November 29th at 7pm

Our next school council meeting will be held on November 29th at 7 pm. For any parents who aren't able to attend in person, we will also be providing a Google Meet Link on the day of the meeting. Please email Mr. MacKenzie for the Google Meet Link.

All parents are welcome. This is a fantastic way to be a part of your child's school community. We are looking forward to seeing you.

Congrats to our Cross Country Athletes!

During the months of September and October, our Cross Country Athletes took part in many different races. Our students did a fantastic job, with many top-ten finishes - a few even won medals! All athletes represented our school well.

This year, we had four of our High School students qualify for the Provincial Cross Country Race. Congrats to those athletes for their great performances this year.

Virtual Mental Health Walk-In Clinic - Kickstand

Our Mental Health Capacity Building team has let us know that there's a new virtual mental health walk-in clinic for Alberta youth and young adults aged 12-25 called Kickstand.

At Kickstand Connect, you can access free mental health and substance use counseling, peer support, employment services, and register for free workshops and support groups! Registration takes only a few minutes – all you need is an email address and to provide your name, date of birth, gender, and postal code when you book an appointment; you do not need your health card for most services.

It's a creation of the Mental Health Foundation, the Stollery, RBC, ATB and the Oiler Community Foundation, and has been "designed by students for students".
