Weeks of 9/19/22 - 10/7/22
The first month of school has certainly gone by quickly. October is filled with many exciting school events. Within this newsletter you will find important dates and information. We look forward to seeing many of our students and families during these gatherings.

A Sneak Peak into the MSHS Classrooms!
World Language classes are off to a fantastic start! We have spent the past couple of weeks getting to know each other in the target languages of Spanish and French, using our listening, writing, reading and speaking skills. We will continue on our journey to proficiency at the various levels throughout the year. Also, September 15th until October 15th is Hispanic Heritage month, so be sure to celebrate with a good book by a Spanish-language author, support Latina-owned businesses, or brush up on your own Spanish by listening to some Spanish-language podcasts or TV shows!
Social Studies
This week the social studies teachers will be launching contests for both the Veterans of Foreign Wars, "Voice of Democracy" for high school students and "The Patriot Pen" for middle school students in their classrooms. Each year several of our students win cash scholarship prizes. The 2022-2023 Theme is, "Why is the Veteran Important?" Established in 1947, the Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay.
Physical Education
High school physical education classes just wrapped up their Yard Games unit. Students learned how to play a variety of games such as spikeball, cornhole, 4 square volleyball and Kan Jam.
Middle School classes have been doing Ultimate Football and Flag Football, along with a passing the football option, and a fitness option of walking and soccer activities such as the Cone Game which involves teams defending a set of cones and trying to knock down the other teams' cones with the soccer balls.
ELA
Middle and high school students are off to a great start this year in English. 7th graders had fun learning about the author Jason Reynolds of their new book Long Way Down. 8th graders crafted some one pagers on their book The Revealers. High schoolers are engaged in a variety of activities concerning vocabulary, writing and analysis of texts.
Science
The AP Environmental students recently completed their "Avian Foraging" lab, where they observe and identify different bird species as they feed in various environments around the school grounds, in order to draw conclusions about food preferences and ideal feeding locations.
Engineering Students are beginning the planning stages for guitar building. Identifying body shape and headstock design and finding inspiration to drive ideas.
Intro to engineering class has just begun working on a series of design challenges to test students ability to create a prototype and create a functional structure using only paper. Students have been pulling out all the stops with their creativity and ingenuity to create some really impressive structures!
Fine Arts and Technology
Students in Documentary Filmmaking just wrapped up their Summer Documentary project. They had to shoot footage throughout the summer and in the last few weeks have been hard at work refreshing their editing skills. Be on the lookout for their debut over on the class YouTube channel: wbtvpro.
George Baroud, Nathan Trott, and John O'Neil of the WBMSHS Band proudly represented West Bridgewater at the Bridgewater State University Middle School Honors Band. Attendees were treated to a wonderful performance of several selections of concert band music. The students worked hard in same-day rehearsals for a successful and entertaining performance.
In Mr. Finley’s class, Art III & IV students have been taking their creativity outside working on pleinair drawings. The French word “pleinair” translates to “outside”. The goal is for students to work in the moment to capture the moment.
Math
The high school math classes are busy implementing the new Illustrative Math program. The Algebra 1 students have been discussing statistics and writing single-variable equations. The Geometry students have been using compasses, straightedges and more to construct multiple geometric figures. The Algebra 2 students have been busy discussing sequences and series.
In the middle school math classes, the 7th grade students have been creating scale drawings which has allowed them to begin discussions about proportional relationships. Meanwhile, the 8th grade students have been drawing various transformations and dilations of figures in order to begin discussions on congruence and similarity.
