Mayfield Messenger

A Message from Dr. Frischkorn

Good Afternoon Mayfield!

Today Mayfield hosted our first Black History Month Assembly and it was absolutely phenomenal. I want to thank Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Dove for organizing this amazing event for our students and our community. That you to our special guests Dr. Newman, School Board Chair Williams, Manassas City Council Member Mrs. Davis-Younger and local hip-hop artist Brien Johnson.

We also had some very talented performances by our own students and staff. Mrs. Porter shared some fascinating facts regarding black history, Mrs. Farmer read a powerful poem by Dr. Maya Angelou, Mrs. Hunley sang an inspiring song, Mr. Badjie led the student is a great song and Ms Porter choreographed a performance by our very own Mayfield Student Dance Team.

Today was definitely a proud Mayfield Moment. I'm so fortunate to be the principal of this incredible community of leaders and scholars.

With gratitude,

Dr. Donald Frischkorn

More about our Special Guest and Performer Brien Johnson

Brien is a graduate of Osbourn High School and went through Manassas City Public Schools. Brien was invited to be part of our ceremony and he graciously accepted our invitation. His performance and message to our students was amazing. We our fortunate to be able to bring our talented community members back to Mayfield and have them inspire our future generations. Brien even stayed at Mayfield during all 3 of our lunches periods and took time to talk with all our students and sign autographs. He really did a great service for his community today and we appreciate that.

Brien Johnson is a hip-hop artist who triumphs in communicating with our generation, using lyrical vulnerability and relevancy complimented by raw energy. Rooted in hip-hop, Brien has begun to create a lane in which listeners all over the country are calling his music "a breathe of fresh air." There are hints of obvious influences from Lil Wayne, Chance the Rapper, all the way to Columbia Records recording artist Lecrae. Brien is becoming a voice of hope, reason, and an inspiration to this generation looking for those 3 things. Brien is poised to make an impact on music and this generation.

Orchestra Concert

Congratulations to our school's orchestra for their performance this past week. Wednesday night our 5th graders and 6th graders put on an impressive show. Mr. Tressler has done a fantastic job at building our students' confidence and getting them prepared to go on stage in front of their family, friends, and classmates. I look forward to seeing their growth.

Rising 7th Grade Registration

The school counselors from Metz Middle School came to Mayfield today to speak with our 6th grade students. The counselors shared the registration process with our students. Attached you will the the letter that is being sent home with every 6th grade student today.

SOL Testing Dates

It's had to believe, but SOL testing is right around the corner. We will start SOL testing during the last week of April. Prior to SOL testing we will give our students plenty of opportunities to become familiar with the testing protocol so that when they take the test, it's all about them showing off how much they learned this year. Please look at the calendars below.

5th Grade SOL Exams: Reading, Math and Science

6th Grade SOL Exams: Reading and Math

March- Students will be administered the Student Growth Assessment (SGA). The SGA assesses students on all the content that has been taught throughout the school year. The SGA provides valuable information that teachers can use to help offer students further assistance prior to the SOL exams in April and May.

April- Students will return from Spring Break and have 2 weeks of time that can be used to help familiarize the students with the SOL testing website. Students will be provided time to use their laptops to make sure that they understand how to use the tools that are available to them while they take the SOL exam. SOL testing will begin during the last week of April. To keep it simple, 5th grade students will have SOL exams on 3 consecutive Tuesdays. 6th Grade students will have SOL exams on 2 consecutive Thursdays.

May- Students will finish up SOL exams in early May. Students who are eligible will have the opportunity to take an expedited retake. Students who score between 375-399 on their first attempt on the SOL will be provided the opportunity to try the SOL exam again.
