Goal Setting

Academic Smart Goal

S - By the end of grade 12 I would like to have at least an 85% average so I can get into a university or college of my choice.

M - To reach this goal I can track my marks on a spread sheet. From the spread sheet I can see what my average in each subject is. If my marks in one subject is too low and one is high I can focus more on the subject with lower marks and focus a little less on the subject with high marks so that I can raise my mark.

A - To obtain an 85% average by the end of grade 12 I will have to take some actions to obtain my goal. One of my weaknesses is that I like to wait until the last moment to do something. Stop procrastinating will be my first action. This will allow me to have more time to focus on assignments and put more effort so that I can get the good grades that I want. Another one of my weaknesses is that I am easily distracted. The teacher will be teaching and I will sometimes be in my own universe. To stop this I need to try to focus more. If I pay attention I will be able to understand concepts better which will help raise my marks. One of my strengths is that I am good at memorizing stuff. I can use this to help get better grades. I can remember concepts and important information for a test. Also if I am giving a presentation I can remember my slides to make it look professional. These are some things that I can do to help me achieve my goal.

R - I think that this goal is doable for me because I already am getting 80's in most of my classes. I only have a few classes that I need to boost my average in. If I can practice getting good marks now it will help me in grade 12. Getting at least an 85% average is important to me because it will help me when I am choosing universities. The higher my grades are the higher my chance is to be accepted. If I follow my plan I know I can reach my goal.

T - I have until the end of June in 2018 to reach my goal because this is when I will graduate from high school. I have until 2018 to make my grades go higher or else I will not reach my goal. Some smaller goals that I have set to increase my marks are to show up to class on time, and get more than 85% on quizzes and assignments to boost my average.

Volunteering Smart Goal

S - By the end of my high school career I would like to have at least 150 hours complete.

M - To obtain my goal of getting 150 hours I can track my hours on a spread sheet or I can keep track of them on the sheet provided by the school. With this I can find out how many hours I make per week and how many more hours I need to reach my goal. If I am not close to my goal I can start to volunteer for more hours than I usually do.

A - To obtain my goal of 150 hours by the end of grade 12 I will have to set up a plan. My plan will be to volunteer every weekend. This will help me gain hours slowly. One of my weaknesses is that I am not a very social person so this discourages me from volunteering. I will have to find a couple friends that will be willing to volunteer with me. With this I can be comfortable volunteering and making more hours. I can also try to make new friends at the volunteer location. This can help me volunteer more because I will not be alone when I volunteer making it more fun than completing my hours. One of my strengths is that once I start a task I give it my best to complete it. This can help me when I volunteer because I will not give up when I am giving a certain task. If I try to follow my plan of volunteering every week with my friends, I should be able to reach my goal.

R - I think that this goal is doable for me because I am already a third there. Right now I have about 50 hours. I can make more hours during the summer and I have one more year to reach 150 hours. This goal is important to me because it means that I have done something useful for the community. Also when universities are looking for kids they will see that I spend my time volunteering and that I have good grades.

T - I have until the end of grade 11 to reach this goal because we apply to universities near the end of grade 12. Also I will not have much time for volunteering once I enter grade 12 because I will be busy with school related things. To help me reach my goal I can do some smaller things like join a club at lunch that gives you hours. This way I will be making at least a few hours during the regular week instead of just volunteering on weekends.

Challenges and Solutions

Physically Demanding

Being a veterinarian has many advantages, but it also has many disadvantages and challenges. Many people think that being a vet assistant is a very easy and fun job, those people would be wrong. Being a veterinary assistant is a very physically demanding job. You must able to pick up an animal and put it onto the examination table (Top 7 Veterinary Technician Challenges & How to Overcome Them). This may seem easy but it all depends on how much the animal weighs. Another task is that you must be able to hold the animal in place during examinations or immunizations (Top 7 Veterinary Technician Challenges & How to Overcome Them). This is hard because the animal may decide to move around because it is afraid, it could also attack you at the same time. The last job that is physically demanding is that you have to walk the dogs so that they get their physical activity (Top 7 Veterinary Technician Challenges & How to Overcome Them). This task is physically demanding because you must have stamina to keep up with the animal and you must be fast enough to keep the animal moving. To overcome this challenge is a very simple task, all you have to do is work out. You can go to the gym and work on building muscles. Another thing you can do is go for walks or jogs to build stamina (Top 7 Veterinary Technician Challenges & How to Overcome Them). You can also build stamina at the gym with the equipment. Although being a vet assistant is physically demanding it is somewhat easy to overcome.

Being a vet assistant can have its ups and down. One of the hardest tasks of being a vet assistant is having to deal with euthanasia. Euthanasia is when you have to put an animal down because the owner does not want the animal anymore or because they are not very healthy and they are about to die. Some animal hospitals make the vet do it, but other locations allow vets to give the responsibility to the vet assistant. Euthanasia is a very hard task to do but there are ways to make it easier. One way to deal with performing euthanasia is to remember that by doing this the animal will not suffer. If you do not perform the task and allow the animal to live on it will suffer until it slowly dies. This is much more painful for the animal and it is much more painful to watch. So it is better to perform euthanasia so that the animal does not have to suffer. Another way to deal with performing euthanasia is to talk to someone about it (Coping with Euthanasia). It is better to express your feelings to someone than to keep them inside you. You may choose to talk to a friend or you can choose to talk to a vet about how they deal with it. The last way that you can try to deal with performing euthanasia is to have another person with you so that they can give you moral support (Coping with Euthanasia). There is no right or wrong way of dealing with euthanasia but there are some activities that you can do to help feel better.

Diseases and Parasites

If you are a vet assistant it is obvious that you will be working with animals. These animals can give you diseases and transfer parasites to you. While working with animals you are at risk of obtaining many diseases and parasites. One of the diseases that you can get is rabies (Veterinary Safety and Health). If a dog comes in and bites you, you will most likely get rabies if the dog did not get its shots. If by some chance you do get rabies, there is a way to cope with it. As a vet assistant you are most likely going to get health insurance so your shots will all be covered. While working with animals such as cats and dogs you are at risk of getting fleas. Fleas are parasites that suck your blood to live. They can jump onto you while you are working with an animal and you won’t event notice. There is also a way to prevent you from getting fleas. The way to protect yourself from fleas is to cover up your body when working with animals. You can do this by wearing gloves and just generally not exposing skin while working with animals. You can also use flea repellant to keep the fleas away (Olesen, Jacob). Even though these animals can give you diseases and parasites there are many ways of preventing them from happening.
