The Buzz at Westbrook School

February 5, 2021

From the Principal...

Dear Westbrook Families,

In the field of education, we sometimes use the terms “windows” and “mirrors” especially when referring to stories. Stories that allow for students to reflect or see their own cultures, backgrounds, or experiences are referred to as mirrors. Stories that offer people a view into someone else’s experience are referred to as windows. It is important that our students both see themselves in the stories that we share and see people who have experiences or backgrounds that may differ from their own. This helps to develop their sense of belonging, build their understanding of the identities that they hold, make connections with others who have similar and dissimilar experiences, and develop respect and appreciation for the things that make us all unique.

Throughout the year, we share stories that serve as windows and mirrors to allow for our students to see themselves and learn about others. February’s Black History Month offers the opportunity to shine a light on some of the stories, voices, and accomplishments that make up our history. Throughout this month, our students will be celebrating Black History Month in a variety of ways. In their classrooms, students will be reading or watching short videos about the important contributions of Ruby Bridge, Rosa Parks, and more. They will learn about musicians who inspired others and made an impact in the music world, including Chuck Berry, Pharrell Williams, and Scott Joplin. Students will explore art by Faith Ringgold and create their own piece that represents her “Dreamer” series. Our students will discuss what makes them special, what respect means, what they can do in their daily lives to be kind and make the world a better place. These are just a few of the ways that we will be celebrating Black History Month at Westbrook.
