Mayfield Messenger
Week 13 Edition of the Mayfield Messenger/November 4, 2022
Message from Dr. Frischkorn
Good Evening Mayfield Intermediate School students and families!
Manassas City Public Schools recently hired nine family liaison's to help increase family engagement and provide support for families and students throughout the city of Manassas. We are fortunate to have our great family liaison at Mayfield Intermediate School, Mrs. Diaz. Mrs. Diaz has been with us for over a month and has been fantastic with supporting families and providing families with the tools they need to help their children succeed.
We are constantly looking for ways to continue to engage families and to increase our family's awareness about what their child experiences in school daily. This week we are looking for families who want to be part of our wonderful learning community.
First, we are gauging interest in families that would like to be part of a Principal Advisory Council. Our goal is for the Principal Advisory Council to begin meeting in January. The meetings will be held at night and focus on several items that, include:
- Providing families with information about current activities
- Gaining feedback from families about how we can make our community better
- Developing ideas about how we can celebrate our students and staff
- Fostering relationships between families and schools that will benefit our students.
Second, we seek fathers and father figures interested in volunteering within the schools and providing support to our students during the school day. Father figures can include grandfathers, uncles, older brothers, etc. The data shows that when fathers are engaged in their child's education, their child achieves greater success. As a father of three, I see and understand the benefits of involvement in my children's education. I want to work with fathers and see how we can create a new program at Mayfield Intermediate that can support children through this pivotal age and prepare our students for success at Metz, Osbourn, and in life.
Always Learning,
Dr. Donald Frischkorn

Principal Advisory Council
Are you interested in becoming more involved in your child’s school? We are looking into creating a Principal Advisory Council that will focus on building positive relationships between the school and families that will benefit our students. We currently envision the Principal Advisory Council as a time for the following:
- Provide families with information about current school activities
- Gain feedback from families about how we can make our community better
- Develop ideas about how we can celebrate our students and staff
- Foster relationships between families and schools that will benefit our students.
If you are interested in participating in an advisory council, please that a moment to complete the following survey.
Frontline Fathers and Father Figures
Mayfield Intermediate School seeks fathers and figures who want to get involved and support their child's education and our school community. The research states that when students have fathers involved in their education, they achieve tremendous academic success in all subject areas. Studies have shown that children with actively involved fathers are 43% more likely to earn A's.
Furthermore, when dads are involved at school, either through engaging with students in the classroom or interacting with teachers, faculty, or other parents, their children learn more and perform better in school, exhibit healthier behavior, are more likely to participate in extracurricular activities, have fewer discipline problems, and overall, enjoy school more (Michigan.gov).
We would love to begin working with a group of fathers and finding ways that our community of fathers and father figures can support our students and help our entire community succeed.
Please complete this form so that we can begin checking the interest levels of our community.
Parents as Educational Partners
Mayfield Intermediate School has hosted Parents as Educational Partners (PEP) classes for the past two weeks. Each week has a different focus. Our PEP program will continue for an additional three classes. The next class is Thursday, November 17th, focusing on study skills and homework.

Veterans Day Bus Loop Parade
The annual Veterans Day Bus Loop Parade took place this morning and our Veterans received a warm welcoming from our 850 Mayfield Bobcats. This yearly parade always brings a great sense of pride to our community as we take the time to honor those who have served in our country’s Armed Forces.
The Importance of Math- Games and Activities to Do at Home
We have been focusing on our students building their number sense and ability to solve multiple types of math problems. We will start including different math activities that students can practice with their families during the upcoming week. This week’s activity will focus on students looking for opportunities to add and subtract when they are in stores and restaurants in the community.
The Importance of Reading- 20 Minutes of Daily Reading
This past week we hosted the Scholastic Book Fair in our library, which was an excellent experience for our students. We saw so many students light up with joy as they shopped for books to purchase for their reading enjoyment. Students could visit the book fair during their library and STEM classes. Additionally, students could visit the library during homeroom time. We also hosted a very successful family night at the book fair and saw many families come and visit.
We hope the students enjoy their books, which support their 20-30 minutes of daily reading time at home.
School Calendar Survey
MCPS is developing the school calendar for SY 2023-2024 & SY 2024-2025. The development of the annual school calendar requires the balancing of the interests of students, families, and staff, along with requirements from the Virginia Department of Education. Please click on this survey link to answer a few questions about your preferences for the school calendar. Your input will be included in the presentation of calendar options to the School Board in November.
