Seminar Series: Environmental Health
Topic: Computational Modeling of B Lymphocyte Terminal Differentiation and Its Suppression by the Environmental Contaminant Dioxin
Speaker: Qiang Zhang, MD, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University
Time: 11:30AM - 12:20PM
Location: Zoom Meeting ID: 916 4798 2916, Passcode: 8030
Qiang Zhang is the Associate Professor at Emory University in the Department of Environmental Health. He received his MD at Harbin Medical University, and his Ph.D. at the University of Connecticut. His research interest is focused on using computer simulations of biological systems to understand and predict the human health effects of environmental perturbations. These perturbations, elicited by environmental chemicals, dietary supplements, and drugs, can alter the dynamics of the molecular circuits and networks operating in cells, leading to multiple disease endpoints. In close collaboration with experimental biologists and toxicologists, he develops mechanistically based computational systems biology models of cellular biochemical and toxicity pathways. These mechanistically-based models will help us to make better predictions of the dose-response relationship.
Join us in discussing some of UGA’s significant changes towards a sustainable future. Everyone is welcome to attend! For more information, contact Haoguang Liu.
Graduate Student Experiential Learning Fund
The Office of Experiential Professional Development in the Graduate School is pleased to announce the launch of a Graduate Student Experiential Learning Fund (GSELF) for the 2020-21 academic year. With support from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, we have established the GSELF as a resource for graduate students to request up to $1,000 to offset the cost of participating in experiential professional development activities. The goal of the GSELF is to support activities that enhance the career development of graduate students within industry, government, or non-profit fields.
The application portal is now open and we will accept and approve funding requests on a rolling basis until funding is exhausted (we will send periodic reminders about this as well). See the below email and the application portal link for more information:

COVID-19: Global Response and Recovery Panel
A team of global-health focused student organizations--Partners in Health, Global Health Union, and UNICEF at UGA--collaborating on a virtual COVID-19 global response panel. As students, our understanding of the ongoing pandemic is often limited by US-centric dialogue. We want this panel to widen our perspectives and understandings of the global effect of COVID-19.
This panel will be held on October 27th at 7 pm on Zoom.
Our speakers will be joining us from Athens and internationally:
- Dr. Paula Davis-Olwell, UGA Global Health Institute
- Dr. Mark Tompkins, UGA Center for Vaccines and Immunology
- Dr. Mariana Prandini Assis, Feminist social science researcher and lawyer, Schulich Law School

Volunteer at the UGA Science Olympiad Invitational Tournament
What: UGA Science Olympiad Invitational Tournament
When: November 14, 2020
8:30am to 5:00pm
Where: Virtually on scilympiad.com/uga
This competition allows hundreds of high school students from around the state to compete in a wide range of exams, building, and lab-based STEM events. Student volunteers are needed to proctor, write, and grade exams. No prior experience with Science Olympiad is required, and students of all majors are welcomed! Times for volunteering are flexible; it is not necessary to stay for the entire duration of the tournament. It is also a great way to get volunteer hours for other organizations!
If you are interested in grading or proctoring exams, you will need to make an account on scilympiad.com/uga. After creating your account, click the “Volunteer Opportunities” box under the Volunteer tab (located at the top right of the page). You will then need to click on the Invitational Event (green box), which will take you to where you can sign up for different shifts.
For volunteers who would like to help with writing exams, please sign up using the following link: bit.ly/ugasowriter. This is a super easy way to get involved and the exam directors for the events will assist you with any info or support you may need when writing!
Once you have signed up for one of the volunteer positions, plan to attend one of our Virtual Volunteer Orientation meetings on October 27th or 29th at 7pm. If you are unable to attend one of these meetings, please contact us at ugascienceolympiad@gmail.com.
Our Groupme for announcements and other information can be joined at bit.ly/ugasogroupme.
If you have any other questions, please send them to ugascienceolympiad@gmail.com.
