6th Grade Advanced Math

This week students learned how to balance a checkbook, continued multiplying and dividing in real world context, completed task #3 on their Real World Experience project, and learned how to convert fractions into decimals. The unit 1 math test will be Friday, October 16th. Yesterday, all students received a packet of review sheets. Completing the sheets would be a great way for them to study for the assessment! In addition to taking the test next week, the students will also complete task #4 on their Real World Experience project, and learn how to plot points on a coordinate plane.

3rd/4th Differentiated Engagement Block (DEB)

We had a fun week of learning! The students continued reading the story, Who Was Marco Polo? They continued answering higher level comprehension questions to analyze the text. I was very impressed with the conversations, discussions, and questions they were asking as we read the first few chapters this week! They are very interested in Marco Polo and his excursion. Also, the students are working on their etch-a-sketch activity for each section of the story. They are creating symbols to represent each part of the reading, along with writing three big ideas/important details they learned about Marco Polo.

The week of October 19th we will be taking a short break from Exploration to concentrate on Habits of Mind and goal setting. Authors Arthur L. Costa and Bena Kallick, of the book Habits of Mind: A Developmental Series, explain perfectly what the Habits of Mind are in the link below.

5th/6th Differentiated Engagement Block (DEB)

This week the students read about different coming of age ceremonies around the world. They showed their understanding of the ceremonies by completing an etch-a-sketch activity. They created symbols to represent each ceremony, along with writing three big ideas/important detailed they learned about each coming of age event. This helped them process their understanding and thinking of the readings. Also, they responded to the readings by participating in a carousel brainstorm activity. Next week the students will begin reading the voted on, coming of age novel, The Red Kayak, by Priscilla Cummings.
