What is dyslexia?
The current definition from the International Dyslexia Association states:
Common Signs of Dyslexia
Kindergarten-Third Grade Ø Failure to understand that words are made up of parts or individual sounds Ø Difficulty learning the letter names and their corresponding sounds Ø Difficulty reading single words in isolation Ø Choppy and labored reading Ø Difficulty spelling phonetically Fourth grade-High School Ø History of reading and spelling difficulties Ø Avoids reading aloud Ø Reads most materials slowly, oral reading is labored, not fluent Ø Avoids reading for pleasure
